Plastic carrier bags - Shock horror, I'm not against them

I'd love to agree with the current line of thought that they're evil but I don't. So before we get rid of them / tax them to oblivion has anyone come up with a half decent alternative.

I'm happy to recycle - what the difference to me which dustbin I put my rubbish in.

My driving is enviromentally friendly -I drive a hybrid vehicle and walk plenty.

I reuse my carrier bags at home as bin liners so don't have any to take with me to the shops.

So please tell me why I should start paying 5-10p a bag.

What about a plastc storage box that just fits under the coal bunker, could the sea gulls get into that? Then use degradable bags inside the storage box, put bags out just before in men due to arrive (too fiddley?, gulls too ready to strike?, how comegulls cant get into ordinary bags too, then?)

Or get a box with lid under the coal bunker, with big sign on it (this is my rubbish bin, don't take it with you!) for the bin men.

You need booby-trapped biodegradable bags that give a small electric shock when touched: strong enough to stun a seagull, but mild enough to give a binman a pleasantly stimulating tingle.

As for me - I'm going to leave this now as I am getting bored with repeating myself constantly.
