Because she won't really know what's going on will she? And I'm figuring she'll like the wrapping paper more than the actual presents so we've just got her 2 little things (a thing you bash and a teletubby book). As I was wrapping stuff for everyone else, including ds, I suddenly wondered if I should have got her more. Far too late now to do anything about it but what do you all think? Did you get your 1yos more than this or did you wait until you thought they'd understand? All views welcome! Thanks.

I have got two carrier bags of stuff. Cost me alltogether a £1 from school xmas fayre for dd (14 months). She will love unwrapping them.

joashiningstar · 23/12/2004 21:54

Yeah, it's fine. We did the same with GS last year (1 year old) and even less the year before (6 days old). We've done more this year and I think that we're more exited than he is. Can't wait to see his little face.

ThomCatsAreNotJustForXmas · 23/12/2004 22:24

Makes total sense not to go mad when they are that young. I bought Lotbags a few things, not much at all, but made them all things she could keep for yeras, like a special red teddy as her 1st Xmas teddy and a china cup, plate & bowl, things like that.

WideWebWitch · 23/12/2004 23:27

Thank you, you've all made me feel sooo much better about it!

Awwwww TC @ "Lotbags" ....

kinderbobsleigh · 24/12/2004 02:10

Totally reasonable. Bob just has a lawn mower (which he will love so much he won't actually need any other presents). We are going to a Church Service with PIL and the advert says "children bring your favourite present". I can't wait to see everyones face when this really noisy plastic lawnmower is being pushed down the aisles.

merglemergle · 24/12/2004 04:27

I think that's fine. At that age they just want to open stuff. You could always let her open some of your presents, she'll probably like that just as much.

Ds is 16 months and he only has about 3 presents-and one of them is the (metal) box our fairy lights came in. He will get a stocking as well though, but that will be socks, toothbrushes (he collects toothbrushes ) a tangerine and a banana, etc.

We buy stuff when he needs it developmentally, not so much at Xmas and birthdays.

I love the idea of buying one special book (eg nursery rhymes) and writing something inside though.

merglemergle · 24/12/2004 04:31

lol at the lawnmower kinderbob!

And Dannie at the fairy bib!

We had to prise ds away from a "barbie hair saloon" yesterday. This bright pink dressing table type thing with a hairdrier and curlers and make up and lights and sound effects.

It was reduced to about 10 pounds and we did consider getting it for him, but NO MORE PLASTIC TAT.

(and he completely ignosred the "tool table", also with sound effects and flashing lights, nearby).

I'm all in favour of minimal Christmas pressies (relatives always buy loads) and money in the bank. How many shape sorters does one baby need anyway?!! It doesn't take long before the house is overrun with toys, so keep it down for as long as possible!

FeastofStevenmom · 24/12/2004 11:32

lol rachelsaunty. DS has only got four shapesorters from relatives throughout the year! needless to say I have vetoed any more!

DannieTheMisanthropicReindeer · 25/12/2004 00:02

Father Christmas has got DS2 an Oxfam goat! I am extremely proud of DH on this one.

fisilhohoho · 25/12/2004 00:38

that's more than we got ds last year when he was 1!

tinseltortoiseshell · 25/12/2004 01:20

Sounds like us, www - hardly anything for dd, much more for ds. I did get more for ds when he was 1, but he was so interested in his first present that we should have left it at that (and it was only a packet of paintbrushes!). She'll love the things you've got her, and really won't care about getting more. Have a good christmas btw!

merglemergle · 25/12/2004 04:40

Just wanted to say-the ELC had a sale on yesterday and now ds has quite a lot of presents!

Kif · 25/12/2004 08:58

Urrrr - my 9 month old is getting a book.

...

1 book

...

I did buy her some trousers recently too...

never crossed my mind to get her anything bigger.

tatt · 25/12/2004 14:38

have felt obliged to buy a present for the latest addition to the family (niece's baby, not mine). Its clothing wrapped in the shiniest, crinkliest paper I could find. The children made a feely card with bits of cloth and cotton wool - he'll too young really even for that but it was a nice idea. I didn't bother giving mine anything except what they would need anyway. So the oldest one got a few cheap things and the youngest got recycled ones.

EbenyZebraScrooge · 25/12/2004 20:17

WE didn't give our youngest (6 month old) anything, he got lots of stuff from other people, though.
This is my 3rd baby, & honestly, for both his 1st birthday & next Christmas I'd like to ask everyone to either give him cash or donate to charity in his name, I know they won't go for it, though.

Pagan · 26/12/2004 06:14

Totally fine. DD (15 months) only got 2 from us. Tons from other people and she still prefers to play with alternatives - coasters, lipstick holder, anyone's handbag.

gscrym · 26/12/2004 08:25

We only got DS a coulple of things for his first Chrissie. They get so much from other people as well that there just isn't the room. Also, take advantage of the relatively cheap Christmas, it won't be too long till DD will want a bike, PC, telly or other more expensive gifts.
