Complicated question about Roman history - any experts about?

I was under the impression that when the romans invaded/took over a country they 'allowed' or even encouraged the countries main religion. This was mainly due to the Easter story.

Thinking more on this subject this week I wondered if there was a reason that in Britain the Romans tried to completely wipe out the Druids.

It seems so completely at odds with their 'supposed' previous methods

So what's going on?

The Druids were actively fomenting revolt KatyMac. They were seen as seditious by the Romans in a way that eg the priests in Judaea were not. I think you could also argue that the Romans viewed the Britons as barbaric savages because of some of the Druidic rites - human sacrifice for example.
The Gauls (despite what you read in Asterix!) knuckled under fairly cheerfully, and any of their Druids who were opposed to the regime fled to the West of England/Wales, where the main locus of opposition to the Roman regime of Britain was still found.

Really?

So we were awkward bu&&ers even then

I would be surprised the Romans found anything much barbaric
