I have asked if there is a dress code but not sure the groom will be any help tbh and I don't know the bride

What to wear??

Probably best to leave the Smoke Crack Worship Satan t-shirt at home.
Don;t worry, there are several Muslim MNers who will be along to offer you some guidance.

avenanap · 16/03/2008 23:24

I think it's no legs showing (long skirt), no naked arms. Someone more helpful will probably be along in a minute or two.

DD1 went to one of a work colleague last year, and she wore a (borrowed) shalmar kameez? Spelling prob completely wrong, but one of those tunics+trousers, they look fab

pukkapatch · 16/03/2008 23:26

no shortshort skirts, and no glaring cleavage.
depends on how strict they are. if so strict that separate seating for men and women, then you can wear your tiniest lbd, and it will be fine.
otherwise, what i said before.

ALthough it's been some years since I worked with muslim women, from my vague recollections I think this is right;

If you are going to the actual wedding and If the family are very religious then I would go for the following - Arms, legs and chest covered, take a scarf to cover your head as you enter the mosque (you might not need it - but if you see other women covering their heads, you might feel better doing the same. The other thing is - if you are taking a partner, you might have to sit seperately in the mosque (women with women, men with men)

If they are not very religious, or it is just the reception then whatever you would wear to any wedding should be okay (but try and stick with keeping arms, chest and knees covered).

Also be careful about wearing traditional dress unless you are muslim - some may be offended, then again, some will not.

kutilputil · 16/03/2008 23:33

hi Theblonde, i'm with Pukkapatch on her advice, find out how strictly Muslim the ceremony is as there are many Muslim do's where they are not at all bothered, if its a strict ceremony then just be modest in your dress and much respect will go to you for just going the extra mile if you wish to do so...but you dont have to turn up in some fancy Indian outfit out of Bollywood as being comfortable in what you like is far important than turning up in a totally alien outfit!

TheBlonde · 16/03/2008 23:37

It is just the reception, not the ceremony so it seems to be drinks and a sit down meal

TheBlonde · 16/03/2008 23:40

as in black top, diff coloured top skirt?

Its usually a reception as the marriage ceremony gets over and done with privately, or earlier.Well if these people are friends you know and care about then they must accept you for who you are and what you wear!so go in something that is comfortable for you, if you do wish to blend in just keep modestly covered but you dont need to wear a scarf etc. As for colours, ALL COLOURS ARE OKAY!dont be so worried, no one can crucify you for getting the colour wrong unless there is a colour code!Enjoy it!

TheBlonde · 16/03/2008 23:51

Yes I think they are having their religious and legal ceremonies separately

I know the groom well but none of us have met the bride

TheBlonde · 16/03/2008 23:52

Thanks, I guess I would consider black a no-no for a British Christian wedding

OP posts:
kutilputil · 16/03/2008 23:55

Where is he from originally, that sort of gives a good indication on what people will wear, if you want to blend in that is?

TheBlonde · 17/03/2008 08:40

Iraq (I think)

OP posts:
pukkapatch · 17/03/2008 11:11

if from iraq, then i would think that black is a no no.
although not sure. some people are horrified by the colour black at weddings. i know my french friends was. but then some people are horrified by red. some by white. etc etc.
wear what you would to any wedding, with only the extra's i said earlier

WendyWeber · 17/03/2008 11:31

Better wear grey then, Blonde - or beige - one of those no-colours

pukkapatch · 17/03/2008 11:32

lol
