Not such a merry Christmas

Sorry, just got to have a rant...
House saga still continuing - have got 1 day left to exchange otherwise it will be January before we exchange
This pales into insignificance after finding out today that dd2 has been exposed to measles at nursery. We now have suspicions that what we thought was eczema on her face is actually something else . She's not been innoculated yet (wanted to wait until Spring) so it's perfectly possible. I'm 11 weeks pregnant and don't know if I've had measles - can't get hold of my mum to ask her.
We were meant to be spending Xmas with my parents, but as my mum has cancer and has been having chemo, we can't, just in case. We're going to be persona non grata with all our friends over Christmas too, as the ones we were planning to see have all got small babies.
b*gger.

Congratulations Pamina.
Just wanted to say thanks for this thread - cos dd has had a raging temp, snotty nose and now cough and was complaining a few days ago that her tongue felt 'funny'. Today she's got a rash on her face - so have managed to get a gp appointment just to be sure it's not measles.

Jimjambells · 22/12/2004 16:17

cab don't worry- the cough comes before the raging temp with measles. The very high temp comes with the rash which starts on the face but moves rapidly downwards. At this stage the child is usually quite poorly. There's a very set way that it comes up (something like german measles is harder to diagnose- it can be quite wishy washy and present in different ways- but measles is very specific.)

meea · 22/12/2004 16:56

My ds2 had measles when he was 12 months and he was really poorly with a burning fever for days before the rash appeared. My mum was also having chemo at the time and we were told not to go any where near her. This was the week before we were due to go on holiday with them.
These thing always seem to happen at the worst time.

cab · 22/12/2004 17:09

Cheers jimjambells - doc says, as I suspected, 'it's viral', and if the rash spreads all over her body it is measles, if it doesn't it isn't. Keeping fingers crossed here.

Good luck Cab! I'm still waiting to see what happens - wonder if Father Christmas will bring measles along with the pressies this year!
I've ordered the morbillinium too (thanks for the tip JJB) so if we are unlucky, I can dose her up.
Reminder to self: get those single jabs booked in asap!

Best of luck too Pami. Doc said if it did turn out to be measles over Christmas not to go to emergency dept / whatever, but to make an appointment as soon as surgery re-opened to check on breathing etc.

tigermoth · 23/12/2004 08:57

sorry to read your tale of woe, Paminativity.

Glad your exchange has gone ahead, at least. Fingers firmly crossed about the measles, and the rest.

serenequeen · 23/12/2004 09:05

congratulations on the house! hooray!

fingers crossed re measles....

katzguk · 23/12/2004 09:26

i know how you feel pami - last christmas we were due to go to the MIL's (undergoing Chemo)for christmas and we were told that if DD was exposed to anything then we couldn't go, we were counting down the days at nursery! Thankfully the only chickenpox outbreak was in another room and DD wasn't exposed.

Fingers crossed for you.

PamiNativity · 23/12/2004 12:00

Thanks again everyone. It's just sinking in that we never have to have people traipsing through the house then saying "oh, you don't get much for your money round here/oh, the rooms are too small/other stupid comment"
As for the measles....well, it doesn't look like anyone from the same room at nursery has them, and although dd2 WAS exposed to the child who has got them, that was a week before his rash appeared and therefore he shouldn't have been infectious at that point. Even if he had been, it will be 2 weeks on Saturday when that occurred, so that would be right at the end of the incubation period.
My mum has been told that there is a risk but it is small. I think we're going to risk it (assuming no spots between now and Sat) and keep dd2 as far away from her as possible.
I'm not even thinking about what risk there could be for me - my mum feels sure that my brother was vaccinated and therefore that she would have had me done at the same time. I can't focus on "what ifs" at the moment!
Oh, and my mum got good news yesterday - her tumour is being shrunk by the chemo so she is all set for an op in the New Year to remove it. So a happy Christmas for all in the Paminativity household!

Oh p- didn't see this when it was at its most awful. Sorry to hear about everything happening at once and about your mum, particularly. I'm SO glad things are looking up a bit for you and the family now though. Will keep my fingers crossed that dd2 doesn't go down with measles.

Thanks! We are, so far, a measles free zone and can go ahead with Christmas as planned (phew!)
JJB, the package from Ainsworths arrived yesterday - how efficient is that? Hopefully won't need to use the mobi-whatnot just yet. Thanks so much for the tip.
