We just kept sending it back and eventually they were obv desperate (i.e. concerned debt) they eventually send a letter addressed to "the occupier of blah blah blah" which then asks if you know the whereabouts of Joe Bloggs.

saltire · 15/03/2008 22:47

AFAIK it's illegal tod itch it, or indeed open mail adressed to other people. I usually just bundle it all into an envelope and address it to the return address on the back of the envelope

BoysOnToast · 15/03/2008 22:48

i bin it

Freckle · 15/03/2008 22:49

If you put it in another envelope, address it to the company it came from but omitting the stamp, they will have to pay the excess postage. After a while, I suspect they'll amend their records .

pinkteddy · 15/03/2008 22:52

It will start to dwindle over time. Just keep sending it back in the same envelope - return to sender - so that they can amend their database. If you notice the same companies keep sending - write in caps - PLEASE do not send any more mail!. It does usually work!! HTH

itsahardknocklife · 15/03/2008 22:53

yes, Freckle, I did that and it worked.

JingleyJen · 15/03/2008 22:56

So I know it is illegal but we have lived here for 7 years and for the first 5 years we got bank and pension stuff through for the previous owners..
in the end I opened the envelope and got a phone number, I told them exactly what I had done and that I would like them to stop sending things, it worked and thankfully they didnt send the police...

nannyL · 15/03/2008 23:03

my worst one is capital one

i suggest it is impossible to get off their mailing list

in my old student house some previouse student had obviosuly jokingly filled in forms and we kept getting mail for

'Dick Head' 'Wayne Ker' etc.... i would send them back with huge letters underlining dick Head does not exist and does not live here please remove him from your mailing list...

at the end of the 2 years i lived in that student house the only mail we got was from capital one

same in my currnet house (have lived here nearly 2 years)... the man that used to live here DIED about 3 years ago... i have mostly got them off the mailing lists, and i do write on it Mr X is DEAD, please remove from your mailing list

on the other side there is stuff for me that is still, 2 years on, delivered to my dads house (my old home) and no matter how many times i send back my junk mail with 'return to sender not at this address', a few bits including capital one (and oddly enough John Lewis who KNOW i live here cause i have accounts with them etc just dont seem to remove me...

have now given up and it just goes in recyling

luminarphrases · 15/03/2008 23:08

it is illegal to open post, BUT not if you believe it that the contents pose risk to you or your family i.e bailiffs at the door etc.

We had regular deliveries of mail from the same company for someone who has never lived here. I sent them all back marked "not known at this address". After several months of this I got fed up and opened the next one, and rang the company, quoting the customer number, and told them to take our address off this person's records. It stopped.

eidsvold · 17/03/2008 07:29

if I Have told them once - by no longer at this address - please remove from mailing list - then I just bin it.

icklelou · 17/03/2008 15:35

We keep getting post for another house on the street, whose number gets confused for ours. Most of the times it's just irritating tat, but we kept getting dvla letters, and then court summons, despite repeatedly sending them back labelled "return to sender, not known at this address". Finally called dvla, and it seems they only take notice if you send a covering letter explaining the situation. All got resolved, but then the court fines got sent to our house, so had to do another letter... Never been in trouble for opening the post, in fact got told to by dvla to see what it was about.

nervousal · 17/03/2008 15:41

We used to get a very exotic range of porn catalogues for the folk who lived in our old house before us. Try explaining that to the bin men on paper recycling day

StealthPolarBear · 17/03/2008 15:42

We still get loads of calls for last people

last one

"Hello can I speak to Mr X?"
"No, sorry, they've moved out"
"Oh well tell him ABC called, he'll know what it's about"
"They've MOVED OUT and we're not in contact. We don't want you to call us again"
"Could you tell us the first line of your address"
"No"

aaargh
