Moulded plug/telly crisis

Help, my telly has packed up. I've changed fuse, checked socket -- I can only deduce it's the plug (and actually the connection has form: this has happened before but resolved itself when I jiggled the flex around).

Unfortunately, plug is moulded onto the flex. Does anyone know the protocol here? Should I just chop b*stard plug off and begin afresh with a new plug? (Have never changed plug in life but have found some pages on internet which make it seem possible)

Help me, help me, it's going to be a long Saturday night

It could be the fuse inside the telly. Not sure what you could do in that case.

changing plugs is easy. do you have another one you could use? With the correct fuse in it obviously.

southeastastra · 15/03/2008 18:37

yes you can cut it off if you know how to replug. don't jiggle it around!

southeastastra · 15/03/2008 18:39

is there no one you can ask if you've never done it before?

jiggling around can cause a short circuit.

themoon66 · 15/03/2008 18:40

Agree with SEA... don't jiggle it coz it might short across two wires inside and catch fire.

MyEye · 15/03/2008 18:41

I'm pretty sure the problem is with the plug connection itself. Bcs jiggling has always fixed it in the past. I could sometimes hear a sizzling sound as it fired up

B*stard moulded plug.

DH is out. He was defeated by the moulded plug issue. I'd just love to have him come back and me to be basking in front of the box.

I may try it after bathing DS. Will dry hands off properly though.

can't you open the plug to check wiring.

MyEye · 15/03/2008 18:52

no, can't open it, it's sealed shut, no screws or anything (think it's a new H&S rule?). You can pop the fuse out of its window, but nothign else.

Easy!!! Cut the old plug off and wire a new one on. Only cost about £1.
It's an 'elf an' safety thing about preventing curious kids re-wiring plugs.
Or so I heard.

themoon66 · 15/03/2008 20:04

I used to rewire plugs for fun when I was a kid

redadmiral · 15/03/2008 20:07

Wire is probably broken where it goes into the plug - all that wiggling around

You can chop it off and get someone who knows what they are doing to rewire. FGS dispose of the chopped off plug safely - imagine curious child plugging it in and touching the wires...

southeastastra · 15/03/2008 20:27

lol you crazy thing moon

i rewired a plug in science aged about 12 and my teacher told me i'd blow up my husband in the future

have you done it myeye? otherwise you can watch tv online

MyEye · 15/03/2008 22:33

I got bogged down in unpacking supermarket delivery. So DH did it when he got back. Works a treat. Shame there's nothing on
