We have recently moved to one of those postcodes that nobody seems to deliver to - scottish island.
Does anyone know any companies who do?

It sounds similar to those who don't deliver to BFPO addresses as well. Bloody infuriating!

Deliver what?

ca7439 · 15/03/2008 21:54

anything, internet shopping etc...
anything that comes by courier you have to pay extra for and lots of companies point blank refuse to deliver at all, so annoying!!

Have you tried M&S and John Lewis? I know that they won't deliver flowers to the Scottish islands- a very helpful M&S girl told me, "It'd take too long and they'd die." - but I can't see anything restricting the delivery of non-perishables on the sites. They might have a hidden charge though.

Scramble · 17/03/2008 23:51

I think a lot do but may charge extra and can't say how long it will tkae, i think the postal services are fairly quick so I don't know why thehy get their knickers in a twist, they seem to rule out the entire highland region too, its mainland FFS.

they include anywhere with an IV postcode which takes in Inverness (not exactly remote) and the main trunk road from Aberdeen to Inverness. It makes my parents as two minutes drive away is the start of the AB postcodes, which are not considered remote.

Ineedacreamegg · 18/03/2008 08:16

I am in an IV postcode Inverness itself is usually fine but for something to travel an extra few miles North they charge a HUGE (for the short journey) amount extra.

That Aberdeen Inverness thing is bloody stpid though because the national courier will generally deliver it to Inverness then it is a local courier who takes it out but it would possibly be more cost effective to get a local courier from Aberdeen to do it.

A lot of people do deliver to the islands but I guess it depends which one some are more remote than others.

mamatoto

says they only charge excess delivery at cost, so if royal mail should be no extra charge.

I lived in Dundee for a few years and Futoncompany made me pay more for a delivery because supposedly I was living in the Highlands&Islands. They didn't back down even when I sent them a link to a map of Scotland.
Now, I do live in the Highlands&Islands and the only company that wouldn't ship something to me was a small nursery where I wanted to order some plants.
Does anybody know if Ikea Glasgow delivers to the Oban area?

saltire · 18/03/2008 09:31

We used to get this a lot when we lived in lossiemouth. I was told it was because we were "remote". I told them it was discrimination! Like someone posted, Lossiemouth is just off the main Aberdeen to inverness road, so not remote really

was there not some company who got into problems because they'd looked at an atlas map of Scotland, and thought that it was only a short hop from Aberdeen to Orkney and Shetland (on an atlas they both go in a little box on the top right hand side of Scotland), and then had to fork out a fortune to get the staff (or goods, cna't remmeber the detaisl) to where they were supposed to be? Or is that an urban myth (at least as urban as it gets in NE Scotland )?

throckenholt · 18/03/2008 09:49

but surely you knew that when you chose to move there ? If you have to pay extra for the courier it is still cheaper than travelling back to the mainland to buy something.

What do others on the island do ? Can't you group together to order things and share the courier costs.

I visited Colonsay last year - and I think they said they do this for deliveries from tesco - it gets delivered to the ferry and they pick it up from the other end.

aefondkiss · 18/03/2008 09:57

parcelforce as far as I know don't now, they did a few months ago, it is a recent change, every company is different, so if you live somewhere that is remote then you have to check, it is really frustrating in Scotland living in an IV postcode generally means some kind of discrimination.... even though we don't live on an island off the mainland.
