Dh is taking dd1 5yrs)out Christmas shopping tomorrow in the big Smoke (to get my pressie I hope!)

He has just asked me to ask you all, what should he do if a) he needs the toilet.. (what happens to dd) or b) she needs the toilet (where does he go?)

Any tips and advice (apart from telling him to control his bodily functions better!!!)

tia!

he goes in the mens in the cubicle and takes her in with him and if she needs it, either the above or go in the family/disabled loo which might be more private and is unisex.....

WideWebWitch · 20/12/2004 19:16

Disabled loos or babychange so he can either take her in with him if he needs a wee or wait right outside the loo while she uses it. Or he could wait right outside the ladies for her to come out, if she'd be ok going in them on her own.

coppertop · 20/12/2004 19:17

Our local Mothercare has a unisex adult toilet and childs toilet in the same room. That could be a solution for both problems.

SnowmAngeliz · 20/12/2004 19:17

If he needs the loo then he should go in the ladies and explain that he didn't want to take his dd into gents. (I wouldn't complain)
If she needs the loo, then the same or disabled.

yuleicorn · 20/12/2004 19:19

don't want to expose her to mens toilets if that can be avoided- not remotely pleasant places are they!!..
Dh thought of asking a shop assistant to watch her whilst he went to do his business... but I'm not convinced...

My dp used to try and find a disabled loo. Now he sends them both in together and waits by the door.

He has had women offer to take them in before though.

I wouldn't take her in the mens, they're 'orrible imo! Mothercare sounds like a good bet to me.

strawberry · 20/12/2004 19:23

Disabled loo definitely first choice.

yuleicorn · 20/12/2004 19:35

They will be heading up from Sloane sq to Harrods (I hope..although I will probably end up with a box of milk tray )

Is there a unisex 'facility' in the great store itself?

if there's no disabled/family loo, DH always takes DD in the ladies. no explanation needed. no one minds.

popsycal · 20/12/2004 19:41

dh tries baby change facilities as well as disabled as they often have a toilet in too

InDulciJulieF · 20/12/2004 22:59

If they are clean then dh takes dd into the mens. Otherwise he uses the disabled.

wheresmypressies · 20/12/2004 23:04

Peter Jones in sloane square has parent and baby area with loos for your dh and dd.................maybe he is off to Tiffanys for your pressie

cranberryjampot · 20/12/2004 23:04

Definitely parent/child loo or disabled loo. There's got to be loads of these if he heads for the main stores, M&S, McDonalds, Boots etc.

joashiningstar · 20/12/2004 23:06

Agree with what's already been said - I was never happy about Dh taking our DD's into gents - so he started using the disabled toilets (not many baby rooms in those days). He continued this with DS as he didn't particularly want to subject him to gents loo's either. Seems like a good compromise.

wheresmypressies · 20/12/2004 23:07

If he is heading just for sloane square there is no mothercare or similar .................Harrods have parent and baby as well as peter jones.

kinderbobsleigh · 20/12/2004 23:15

Disabled or parent and baby room. A big no to leaving with shop assistant, it's not fair to give them that responsibility.

anteater · 21/12/2004 00:20

When my daughter or son needs to go I know we only have a few mins (big fruit eaters!) so I just head into the smartest shop and head for the ladies, even tho Im not Never been told off yet. Wouldnt go near the Gents with them.

pixiefish · 21/12/2004 07:59

Take her to disabled toilet, mothercare toilet or as a last resort the ladies- they're all cubicles so he won't see anything. I wouldn't let her go in on her own, neither would I leave her standing outside on her own, neither would I like to see her have to go in the gents.

Personally wouldn't be bothered to see a bloke in the ladies with his daughter
