Opinion on electric cars.

Should we buy an electric car? It would be nice to hear an opinion from people that have them.

We live in a part of the country where you can drive any vehicle. It will be used mostly for school runs. And we don't fall into the green marketing category.
So the main factors choosing a vehicle is practicality and cost.

Do you have a driveway and somewhere to install an at home charger?
If the answer is yes and your budget allows you to purchase an EV then what is stopping you?
We have had 1 EV since 2019 and this year changed our 2nd car to an EV too, wouldn't go back to an ICE

And before all the range killers jump on, we have used the EV for many long distance UK trips including, London to Scotland (many times), We have never not been able to find a charger and quite enjoy breaking up the journey for lunch whilst we charge.
For local runs it is great, my only gripe is that we have gone for larger cars so not always the easiest to park, but there are plenty of smaller EVs now.

Yes we have a driveway and in fact a charger lead which was installed when the house was build. However last petrol vehicle we bought on the lease the comparable electric model was nearly twice per month. So if you drive 10/12k per year would the electricity offset the higher lease price.

No idea on leasing - prices change all the time, so you'd need to do your own sums for that (and we get some of our charge from home solar panels, so it's free). But I agree with Onthegrid about range being no problem. We did a loop of Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland this year and had no problem with finding or waiting for chargers.

I've had one for a couple of years now, and they're just a far superior product to ICE cars. Clean, smooth, quiet, cheap to run (if not to buy!) assuming you can charge them from your home power. An EV tariff from your supplier can make it dirt cheap, and solar panels makes it even cheaper.

Downsides:

  1. Expensive to buy
  2. At the moment, because they're so new, they're super expensive to insure! For a 50k car I'm currently paying £850 insurance, and that's with a 14 year no-claims.
  3. On a long journey you have to be aware of where you're going and where you plan to charge. The charging only has to be done every 3 hours or so, and it'll be finished before you've managed to drink your coffee and eat your cake, but it's still something that has to be planned rather than just pulling off of the motorway when you run low on fuel.
  4. If you get a Tesla, they're fantastic and the charging network is amazing, and overall I love it, but Elon Musk is a bit of knob.
