is this a bit mean and what would you have done?

last week at school we had a letter to say that on the friday for world book day the children and staff were going to dress up.

ds2 said i'll be mr bean

anyway, i had nothing remotely mr bean like for him and he was making absolutely no effort to even think about what he could dress up in for that or even an alternative.

he's 9 btw

i kind of felt like oh right, here goes the usual, make no effort and mum will wave a magic wand on the day and turn you into mr bean!

anyway i was pretty busy and the night before realised nothing had been sorted, so, dug out an old pirate costume but he wouldn't wear it, and i didn't blame him.
he seemed to think the dressing up was optional and the letter did say that if not dressing up, uniform was required. so, he went in his uniform.

today, i am told that all the kids are coming in to school tomorrow in sports gear for red nose day EXCEPT those that hadn't dressed up last week!

apparently none of the year 6 boys had bothered so, the other kids had voted in assembly for it to be this way tomorrow.

trouble is ds2 is in year 4 and he is the ONLY one not allowed to come in his sports wear.
he is crying and saying the kids will not allow him to play and he doesn't want to go etc etc

Very mean. Didn't know it was red nose day tomorrow.

Pennies · 13/03/2008 20:23

Oh send him in his sports gear - they can hardly make him change can they?

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 13/03/2008 20:24

Sounds a bit mean - it really wouldn't hurt to let him wear his sports wear (can he not just do it??

WigWamBam · 13/03/2008 20:24

Actually, I think I would be inclined to send him in his sports kit anyway. I can't see them remembering exactly who, outside Y6, wasn't dressed up last week.

It would take a pretty hard-nosed teacher to send him home once he's there in his sports kit ...

constancereader · 13/03/2008 20:24

Send him in his sports gear with a note explaining. I'm sure no one wants to upset a child like that, they probably haven't realised the situation regarding your ds.

cheeryface · 13/03/2008 20:27

i spoke to the teacher, i said i thought it was mean and really it was partly my fault he hadn't dressed up and she said, well, i can't change it as it was aggreed by the children.

i thought fgs some kids feel silly dressing up and hate it and others love it so get over it!

yes, i think i will send him in tracksuit. just hope none of the other kids give him any grief

Unbelievably mean!!! Send him in sports kit.

constancereader · 13/03/2008 20:28

I think that teacher is overstating the case.

Hope your ds has a nice day anyway.

No1ErmaBombeckfan · 13/03/2008 20:29

Geez - teacher sounds like a real gem ... wonder what would happen if a Y5 told her to take hike...

No excuses for stupid people...

Ledodgy · 13/03/2008 20:29

Ixs it red nose day tommorrow? Weird last year dd's school all had to wear something red.

LynetteScavo · 13/03/2008 20:31

I HATE NON UNIFORM DAYS!!!

(sorry I have nothing constructive to say)

ingles2 · 13/03/2008 20:31

No it's sports relief tomorrow.

cheeryface · 13/03/2008 20:31

thanks. i felt that sending him in sports kit was the way to go, just had a nagging doubt that maybe he should be learning to make an effort and i would then be molecoddling him iyswim!

he's all worried about going in now and he doesn't like school much as it is

teacher is a bit of a prat i reckon

Ledodgy · 13/03/2008 20:31

CrackerOfNuts · 13/03/2008 20:35

Send him in sports stuff, with a note to give anyone who has a problem with it, asking them to ring and speak to you.

windygalestoday · 13/03/2008 20:37

isnt school being petty tho?

WigWamBam · 14/03/2008 20:01

How did he get on, cheeryface?

cheeryface · 16/03/2008 16:15

he went in looking all worried, i went to the teacher and said he's wearing his tracky so tough (or words to that effect)
and all was o.k when i went to collect him

Well done.

At the end of the day, school staff probably have more important things to worry about.
