Telling a NEW boss you're pregnant - advice!

I was employed by my boss in November 2007 after working for several months as a temp for him.

In December 2007 i found out i was pregnant and after many complications, I am not 4,5 months. How do I tell him - he will be so dissapointed.

I work for a large company and he is a top Director - it will be difficult and costly to replace me during my leave.

I am so worried and this is normally such a happy time!

well presumably you can't keep it a secret for much longer!

belgo · 12/03/2008 12:55

don't worry. I'm sure he's had other employees who have become pregnant

you don't need to worry about how they will replace you etc - that is their problem

he may be happy for you!

Chill. you are not spreading an incurable disease around the office. You are having a baby. Managers (usually) understand that - especially if they work for large companies. Accept the congratulations and then tell him you love the job and hope that your pregnancy won't affect your work for a little while yet.

I had to do this! I'd only been there 3.5 months when I had to tell my boss the news. I was terrified at the prospect!

I sort of managed to get him alone in the canteen over lunch, and said something along the lines of "you know the hospital appointment I had the other day that ran on and on? I'm really sorry it took so long - but it's because I've just found out I'm pregnant...!"

To be fair, he took the news brilliantly well (I think it helped that I told him that it was as much of a shock to me as it was to him) and was really supportive.

Good luck!

I had to tell a new boss I was pregnant the week after I started working for her!

I had a teaching job that involved lifting lots of heavy kit ion and out of the car, so she needed to be told early.

She was fine about it.

Don;t worry! And good luck with the rest of your pregnancty.

Also, remebr you have the law on your side. They cannot dismiss you for being up the stick.

CONGRATULATIONS!

I wouldn't say he's a 'new' boss if you've been working for him on a permanent basis since November and several months before that as a temp. You have been there long enough to make your mark on the job, demonstrate how good you are and have as a result been offered a permanent job a few months ago. So it's not as if you started last week and are having to break the news having just met him.

Just tell him, give him a bit of credit, I expect he has had this before, will not be hugely surprised and if he is a bit disappointed, I would expect him not to show it to you and instead be full of congratulations.

In terms of worrying about your expensive maternity cover, lots of companies put money specifically in their budgets to cover maternity leaves that may happen, as obviously it happens all the time and almost always is a 'surprise' to some degree or another. Even if this isn't the case where you work, as a large company they will certainly have the resources to sort out maternity cover without you having to panic about it.

Tell your boss, say you would be happy to contribute to discussions about how your role can best be covered during your absence, will of course do everything you can to ensure the transition is a smooth one for everyone affected and would like to discuss objectives for the few months ahead.
