How long do you think it takes before it needs doing again?
Not the electrics etc but
How long before you repaint everything inside?
How long do you reckon carpets should last?
How long before the kitchen needs replacing?

Assuming it was all done to a v good standard in the first place - wool carpets, expensive wooden kitchen, Farrow & Ball paints etc etc.

Just canvassing opinions - then I'll tell you how long everything has been done in my house and how it is looking now.

pph

surely your house has an air of dont-care, moneyed, rural chic?

(mental note to self - always pretend to be out if pph comes for unannounced visit - formal rooms indeed!)

This thread is making me LARF!

I moved in to a total shithole that I understand was last decorated in 1998 (partially). The rest of the house, along with the bathroom fittings and kitchen appear to date from, ooh, roughly the mid-80s, at a guess.

But then I LOVE peeling, faded wallpaper, dado rails and floral borders dividing the stripy wallpaper from the flowery/textured wallpaper around the middle of the room. Those Country Homes and Interiors Magazines I buy every month are just so I can laugh at the poor deluded souls who spend money doing up their houses.

Who wouldn't want to live in a house that looks like the set of The Royle Family?

Shit. I really miss my old house. All of them.

BoysOnToast · 11/03/2008 11:24

indeed. thought i was soooo clever putting it everywhere.

doh.

still, give it another few years and i can paint over the lot of it, eh?

do you hate choosing colours? i like doing that... i have all the posh paint co colour cards. i did a short course at chelsea and w'ster, donchaknow (was the only way to get dp to trust me to do the interiors )

I went to a party at a huge/elegant house a few years back - a house that has been featured in multi-page spreads in several magazines. The hosts have a policy of 'no red wine' because they were/are so determined to avoid damage to their fancy/expensive stuff.

It was the first time I had ever seen (or heard of) a cork ceiling....

PrincessPeaHead · 11/03/2008 11:26

come here and choose colours for me then boys on toast
I like fabrics. Don't like paint.

sounds like a deal.
i like fabrics too... but i get bogged down in all that pattern and stuff. i need a selection of the best of a bunch, then i can get excited about fabrics... trawling through bolts and bolt of hideous fabrics sends me to sleep.

BoysOnToast · 11/03/2008 11:31

oh yay, id love to choose paint colours for someoen elses house - if only you meant it!

PrincessPeaHead · 11/03/2008 11:32

sort of enid
but remember I'm not english so I really don't do that completely slovenly dog-hairs-everywhere-haven't-repapered-since-1957 look.

formal rooms=front half of the house which costs too much to heat so is barely ever used
we live in the kitchen
