Tongue tie ?

so my son was 5 months on the 3rd.

He seems to have tongue tie, I think. I’ve mentioned this to doctors, a midwife, health visitors. No one has ever seemed interested. I just keep being told that he’s fine, he’s gaining weight and is healthy.

It actually caused problems with breast feeding, it was so painful I physically couldn’t carry on. He suffered with awful reflux, all the doctor did was tell us to try anti reflux formula. This has worked but I’m still so worried that it could cause further issues for him such as his speech development. It doesn’t seem to cause him problems, but will it eventually?

does anyone know if they have an age limit on a tongue tie procedure? Or how much roughly it will cost please?

It appears to not be in the centre of his tongue like I keep seeing with other people, it’s more on either side?

any advice and Information would be wonderful

My now 7 year old has quite severe tongue tie. Like you I was dismissed as she was gaining weight. We managed to persevere with breastfeeding but it was a tortuous experience compared to my other two DC and she self weaned at 11 months which is years earlier than the others.

Now she still can't really stick her tongue out but her speech is fine and it doesn't bother her at all. I don't forsee it causing any problems now.

two of mine had severe tongue ties, there were never any issues at all, except couldn't stick their tongue out. One had it cut in his 20s as it was interfering with demonstrating vocal exercises in a children's choir he was teaching. The other had an episode of catching it on their brace and bleeding in their teens.

No problems at all with feeding, talking or singing in either of them

Dentist here.
It’s a little difficult to see from the photos, but I would suggest you take him to a dentist who has a laser. If it’s decided that something needs to be done, the procedure and healing are much better when a laser is used ( no stitches would be needed) . Even easing the tongue a little can make a huge difference.
Yes you can live absolutely fine with a tongue tie. But you don’t need to!

Most private practitioners will cut up to 12 months. There’s ongoing research onto whether laser or scissors is better. There are concerns laser cuts too deeply but laser proponents believe it is less likely to reform. You can find a local practitioner here https://www.tongue-tie.org.uk/find-a-practitioner

It’s quite a straightforward procedure at five months. Average cost is about £200. However long term speech difficulties from tongue tie are quite unusual so it may not be something you want to pursue,
