Do you have to live in a posh house to have a cleaner ?

We are really struggling at the mo to keep on top of things.
I started a new job 3 weeks ago.Its only a secondment and a job share at that. However my job share doesnt seem to come to work much and im having to go in most days . With 3 children and a lot more driving there just doesnt seem enough hours in the day.My house is a mess and everyone is tired and naggy.
We only live in a 3 bed semi on a nice little estate-was thinking of perhaps having someone come in and clean for a few hours a week just for a mnth until my project is up and running.
So-do ypu have to have a big posh house or is it ok to have a cleaner come to my wee house ?

I live in a three bed terrace and I have a cleaner. She's wonderful.

fruitymum · 09/03/2008 13:07

Go for it - a couple of hours from a cleaner - will make your life much easier esp with children and work. I had one 2 hours a week, before DD arrived, and I worked full time, took on a committment to develope a new service which meant working at home too. Have an almost 3 acre garden and grass takes a couple of hours to cut - much more relaxing being outside doing that than cleaning loos! Also you will be providing someone else with an income.

Sunshinemummy · 09/03/2008 13:14

My cleaner comes for three hours a week. During that time she cleans, tidies, makes the bed, puts DS's clothes away (not ours), irons and sometimes cleans the windows. The house is lovely after she has left.

monkeytrousers · 09/03/2008 13:15

Don't think so but keep an eye out for the posh police just in case

mrslurkalot · 09/03/2008 13:17

I have a 3 bed semi on an estate and a cleaner. go for it - it will take so much pressure off you!

cremolafoam · 09/03/2008 13:23

fb i am thinking of a cleaner too.i have just got out of hospital, am starting a new second job next week, the house is a dump, but it is small too.
am talking myself into it.

Blu · 09/03/2008 13:23

Of course - cleaners don't accept money from ordinary people who happen to have children and woh, oh no

....and tell your jobshare partner to get a cleaner too- then s/he might actually do their fair share at work!!

foxythesnowman · 09/03/2008 13:31

No.

I have a flat, 4 DCs 6 and under and a DP who is away a lot and doesn't do any housework when he is here.

I am a SAHM, but would be (more of) an uptight nag if it weren't for her. I keep the house clean and tidy, she comes in and does the job which I then try to maintain for the next 6 days.

It might seem like a bit of a luxury but we do have to make compromises to have her. I know that its more to me than having a clean house.

Ok got someone local coming tomottow for 4 hours.
Have asked her to hooover and mop through.wipe kitchen surfaces and polish furniture.Dust and polish 3 bedrooms, but free reign on 2 childrens.Clean mirrored wardrobes and any windows she can manage.
Have asked her to leave bathroom as renovating.Ironing already done.
Is that ok ? Prob wont take 4 hours and if not could i ask her to wipe out kitchen cupboards maybe x

of course not!! time is money, etc!
and anyone with kids needs a break for mental health reasons

ThingOne · 11/03/2008 15:16

I only have two hours in a 4 bed house atm but I get my cleaner to do the floors, bathrooms, scrub highchairs and then do ironing. She'll let you know what she can and cannot do. Make sure you ask if she doesn't.

calsworld · 11/03/2008 15:20

fakeblonde, how have you gone about finding a cleaner? will she be there when you are or will she have a key?

jelliebelly · 11/03/2008 15:24

Four hours should be plenty. If you are paying by the hour and she finishes early then she should do other jobs to fill the time eg ironing, changing beds, cleaning inside windows, cleaning out cupboards etc. After her first visit you should have a chat and work out what can and can't be done in four hours!

You won't believe the difference it makes to come home to a lovely clean house.

abigaillockhart · 11/03/2008 15:25

4 hours is a lot - my cleaner does 4 hours over 2 visits but irons for two of those visits.

I get mine to strip the beds every week as I hate doing it - she then irons them on her next day. You could also ask her to clean windows or wipe doem kitchen cabinets if she has spare time.

abigaillockhart · 11/03/2008 15:25

Irons for two of those hours that is!

Pannacotta · 11/03/2008 15:34

4 hours sounds quite a lot, she could prob do more in that time than is on your list. You don't mention your living room or much in your kitchen, such as the hob/sink etc.
Do you have a downstairs loo?

fakeblonde · 11/03/2008 16:46

Thingyone-its s local mum i know who was looking for something unofficial just until she goes back to work in aug.ATM she is helping out occassionally with my little boy but i really dont need her because hes at school and has a fabulous childminder. I asked her if basically we could help each other as she is finding to make ends meet and i am struggling with work and 3 children while i am setting up a new project at work. Anyway she jumped at the idea . Wont be doing anything regular-just comingto clean tomorrow nd maybe just 2 hours after that most weeks but nt when im on hol.
Cant wait.It means i can take a breather and spend some time with my children more instead of cleaning !

It is a wonderful feeling isn't it ! I love Wednesdays as I have a spotless house, and a rack full of ironed stuff.

I met my current cleaner through Freecycle, and she babysits for us too
