Hi all, I have recently applied for rehousing with my local council advised by the gp, my youngest daughter has some behaviours issues which are putting my oldest at risk sharing a bedroom. The go has written a letter to support this on welfare grounds and referred her to a specialist. The council Won’t accept the letter on its own without me applying for dla, even though we have no diagnosis which I have explained to them. I have read through all of the councils policies in regards to housing stating nowhere about having to claim dla. Does anyone know if this is correct?
For a laugh the housing officer advised me to sleep on the sofa for the time being so they can have their own bedrooms 😂😂

That is usual advice to be honest, the parent to give up the room. Unfortunately with no evidence you could by making it up to get a bigger house. Do you have any reports or assessments done that could support your claim?

I have two letters from the gp stating we need upsizing for safety of both children and evidence she has been referred to a specialist

Have you contacted school to ask for early help and team around the family type stuff?

MintJulia · 11/10/2023 22:31

With respect, my siblings used to fight like cat & dog, when we were three to a room but it wasn't a reason to ask for a new house.

You could share with one of your DDs or as they say, give them a room each and you sleep in the sitting room.

You don't need a diagnosis to claim DLA.

A settee bed in the living room for you is a sound idea temporarily though.

BananaSlug · 11/10/2023 22:32

Share with one of them? My daughter is in my room as can’t share with her sibling and we do get dla at HR

I have been in contact with the school they are aware and she has been seeing someone at school. The problem is she is well behaved at school so it’s hard to assess, after seeing the gp and showing her the outbursts she didn’t want it to go through school and has referred her personally.

You don't need a diagnosis to claim dla so apply now as it's taking months atm

The council can't just pluck a house out of the air because the GP writes a letter

Plenty of people on the waiting list have additional needs

You need to through everything you can at getting housed

Stomacharmeleon · 11/10/2023 22:35

Echoing what others have said.

I also slept in the living room for three years. Might be a long time before you are rehoused so you need to be practical.

Beee1005 · 11/10/2023 22:36

This isn’t usual sibling fighting unfortunately. She has serious issues with any of her belongings being touched my anyone else which is also a huge trigger for her violent outbursts

You can apply for DLA without a diagnosis so don't wait for a referral. You just fill in the DLA form explaining the extra things you have to do or provide for your child.
Depending on how many bedrooms you need and how often they come up in your area you might be waiting a while though, I've officially needed an extra bedroom for over 5 years and I'm still waiting.

Beee1005 · 11/10/2023 22:41

I don’t expect to be housed immediately I simply asked if dla was needed to be accepted

OP I work in health care - being realistic for those on the URGENT priority list (ie those registered as unsafely homed, with multiple forms of documentation and diagnoses, or those without homes, such as the families we support who are living in hotel based room accommodation with children with additional needs) the wait is 3-10 years.

Some of our families with children with significant medical needs (such as those in wheelchairs that live in flats without lifts) are housed quicker - but overcrowding remains a difficulty.
The parent in a living room scenario is a realistic solution from housing. Alternatively can the larger of the bedrooms be divided with a partition wall?
My guess is that depending on the wait times, while DLA may not technically be needed, without it/with only a GP letter you’d remain a lower category for priority and bidding - and the children may well reach 18 before you’d reach the top of the list.
