Come and tell me that it is a great place to live that I should move there immediately

I REALLY need a kick up the a*e to get me to make a decision about moving.

Thame is about 25 mins drive from where we are.

I always think the town centre looks quite pretty, but the countryside's too flat for me. I like hills, so I'd always move more out towards Henley, where there are some pretty villages in the Stonor and Hambleden valleys.

There is a lovely long bike ride (Phoenix Trail) from Thame to Princes Risborough.

Where are you at the moment and what's important to you (I know the hills/flat ground thing is probably just a weird peculiarity of mine )

Oh I like hills too but our current family situation is too long and complicated to go into here but in a nutshell

Dh works in Oxford, I work in Surrey and we all (DH, Me and DS) live in Surrey. This is causing us all sorts of problems with flexibility of work and when ds starts school (1.5 years time) this will get worse.

Moving to Oxford itself would entail me giving up work and the properties are not so much cheaper that we could do that without quite a lot of financial difficulty.

Thame looks quite nice, not too far from Oxford, and near the M40 to get back to London quickly (where my elderly ailing parents live). We have also visited it occasionally and it always seemed a nice town.

It seems cheaper than Oxford so we could afford for me not to have to work for a while (I'd probably retrain). Dh could reduce his commute from 2-3 hours each way 1-4 times a week to 30 mins a day.

I suppose I picked Thame as a possible place to move for convenience of location more than anything really and it seems to have quite good schools .

On the other hand I like where we live now I have family friends etc and at 43 years old I am reluctant to start all over again where I know no-one.

If we could afford to buy a small house (as opposed to the small, gardenless flat we have now) in this area and me still give up work then we might choose to do that but finances dictate that that is going to be very hard..

Things are complicated by the fact that dh loves his job and would prefer to stay in Oxford. I on the other hand don't love my job (4 days a week) but it provides almost as much income as dh's FT job does but I do like where we live now.

There are so many variables and we need to decide soon really what we want to do as we will need to think about what schools to apply to for ds soom - Aghhh !!

Well, I can see why you think Thame would be a good option, then as there are very good links with the M40 and also rail links.

The property there does seem quite reasonable, price wise, and in a lot of these small market towns I think you'd find it quite easy to make friends. Certainly where we are, the typical set up is husband commuting into London, wife either sahm or working pt locally, you certainly wouldn't find that everyone's known each other from school, everyone will be an incomer and therefore more keen on making friends.

Other options would be Watlington or Wallingford, but I don't know how they'd be for train travel.

What sort of work do you do?

Lazycow · 07/03/2008 14:23

Thanks for that mublechum. The general info on market towns is quite reassuring too having always lived in Greater London.

I used to live near there, it is very nice!

I work in a marketing/market research agency. I would like to retrain though as flexible part time jobs are hard to come by in this industry.
