Rant alert! Bl**dy electricity board!

As many of you will know, our house sale has been a nightmare from start to finish. It finally looked like it might be ending because we had the buyer's survey on Monday and were aiming to exchange before Christmas.
Yesterday I got a call from the estate agent saying that our buyer had spoken to the surveyor who was very concerned about a broken electricity box in the cupboard under our stairs which, if touched, would prove fatal .
Obviously, we rang the electricity board immediately and dh headed home so he could be there when the engineer rang to say when he was coming. Of course the engineer didn't ring and so dh missed him, but he came again and taped over the box (the cover was missing and needs to be replaced).
Our buyer has asked for confirmation in writing that the box has been fixed, which is fair enough.
Dh has spent the entire morning on the phone to the electricity board trying to get someone to agree to write to us to say that the box is safe and that they will be fixing it soon. The electricity board initially refused to do so, even though dh explained that the sale of our house was dependent on it. Eventually, once dh had been passed upwards enough times, they have agreed, but it is unlikely that we will get the letter in the next week. Why do they make it so difficult? We have asked if the exchange can go ahead anyway, with completion dependent on us getting the confirmation, but I don't know if our buyer will agree

Oh Pamina. Much sympathy. Sorry yet another thing's gone wrong with the house sale. How stressful. So hope the buyer will agree to exchange. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

How annoying for you. The other thing you may be able to do is get a local electrician to do a safety inspection (the sort required if you are going to let out a property) and write out a certificate. If your estate agent also deals in lettings they may know someone who could do it quickly. Might cost you a bit to do so but may be better than holding up the sale.
