This may sound stupid but when you get a cab with your baby they must surely have to be in a car seat? I saw a lady gettind into a cab with baby and no seat!

I have had this argument recently with my Dad who said that in no circumstances could he pick us up from the station because he would not have child seats. Thats railway station, not police station (I do not go regularly on Jeremy Kyle).

Apparently for a short distance which is not done regularly it's ok.

If you have to go in a taxi, and a car seat is just not practical, there are some things you can do to reduce risk. In a black cab, with a small baby, I'd wear the baby in a sling, and put the seatbelt between you and the baby (not around you both! in case of an emergency stop, you'd crush the baby). And in a normal car, with a bigger baby, I've used a flight vest. Obviously not as good as a car seat, but better than nothing, and it tethers the kid to the seatbelt.

in black cabs I seem to remember reading the safest thing to do was leave them strapped in the pushchair and strap that in (not facing direction of travel) with the wheelchair strap.

sorry to hijack - what is a flight vest? is it for babies on planes (even as I type I know I must sound dumb!) where can you get one?

Thanks and sorry, hijack over.

Here are flight vests. I don't think they're legal to use on UK flights, even though they look a lot nicer than those waist things. I own one, have only used it for airport transfer type things, when taking a car seat just wasn't viable.

Inside the UK, we almost always use a minicab firm that has Sharan cars, which have two built in child seats (no good for stage 0), so we don't have to faff with car seats.

You can also use one of these to keep them secure in taxis
