Is there any way you could make your staff accountable for all money they handle? Has to tally with recipts invoices etc.

gg its a very very serious offecne if it gets to court
often ends in prison

choccypig · 06/03/2008 15:44

How much do you pay them?

brimfull · 06/03/2008 15:48

dh is setting up someway to make them accountable for what gets rung into the till.

choccypig, why do you want to know that?

if possible only have 1 person to a till and 1 person to take over for breaks then if till is down pull them up over it. Make them count float in the till in morning and get them to help you cash up.
This may be easier said than done depending on business size.

On a sat job I had we had this problem and thats what they did. If people did half days tills were cashed up at shift change and new till float for new person. This seemed to work it either spooked out the criminal or made people more careful with change checking money as it had to add up at the end of the day

if you suspect a particular person perhaps keep them busy with other jobs, if the till recifys itself then your suspisions are probably right

We had a restaurant and it was a constant problem. Cash businesses are very tempting for people who are at all light fingered it seems. If you can you really need to get proof of some sort. If you make it at all obvious you are watching them, they will find some other way. We had 6 instances of proveable theft over about 8 years, there were maybe more that we never knew about. With all except one we presented what evidence we had and sacked them. They were given the opportunity to admit what they had done and keep their jobs, not one did, they all threatened to take us to tribunal, again, not one ever did. With the other one, she was also caught stealing from another member of staff so we brought the police in, in the end, her parents paid back everything we could prove she had stolen and the charges were dropped.
It's a horrible problem to deal with & you hope it will just go away, but unfortunatley it never does. Also, depending what sort of theft and business it is, the other staff are perhaps aware of it too, so you need to deal with it as a deterrent too.
Good luck!

Only one till.
Cashing up when a staff member leaves early is a good idea though.
Will show this to dh.

jenpet-god how awful to have it happen so many times. This is the first time as far as we know.
Think it involves telephone orders .

Quite hurtful really .

My husband's company fits surveillance cameras - more often than not they are positioned to train on the tills and the staff, rather than simply the customers.....

Think it may come to that ggglmmpo
