Whilst driving, my steering wheel vibrates when I steer right

I noticed today when going round a roundabout and changing lanes to go on the right lane, that the steering wheel vibrates. I could hear something as well, but cant really describe the sound as I could only hear it faintly and quickly but everytime I steered right. Also when driving, I kept hearing clicking noises like when you put your indicator on from inside the car by the left side of dash board. Should I go to a garage asap? I dont know a lot about cars, but it did worry me when it happened, but I got home fine.

This happened to me when I had 2 new tyres put on my car - they were meant to adjust the tracking??? bearings???? can't remember which, at the garage, but hadn't done. The steering wheel vibrated wildly every time I went over 20 and it was quite scary. Once I'd been back to the garage and had it fixed it was ok.

WigWamBam · 16/12/2004 17:27

Sounds as if it might be the tracking, your wheels might need balancing.

jingleballs · 16/12/2004 17:28

tb, when it happened on our old car DH said the trackin was wey out, this needs to be done as a) it wears the tyres on one side apparently and it's best to only pay for that thean all new tyres again. you can test it thou on a straight bit of road put the wheel straight and hoover ur hands over the wheel, if the car starts to pull to one side it needs doing (or at least that's what my uncle said who's an aa man)

MaryChristmas · 16/12/2004 17:31

Agree it's the tracking and it does wear at the tyres. I saw the damage it done to mine.

jingleballs · 16/12/2004 17:33

i think the trackin on our one was going to be around £18 if i remeber rightly, or was it £30,?/ can't remeber, but better to pay that than £50+ for the tyres.

tammyBEARinggifts · 16/12/2004 17:35

ok thanks, so if i go the garage and it is, it shouldnt cost too much? and is it needed to be looked at straight away?

OP posts:
jingleballs · 16/12/2004 17:35

i think it depends how bad it is.

OnZephyrstdayofXmas · 16/12/2004 17:36

could be that the bearings have gone as well - best to get them checked just in case

WigWamBam · 16/12/2004 17:38

It needs to be looked at straight away before you do more damage to the tyres and end up having to replace them, too.

tammyBEARinggifts · 16/12/2004 17:39

only noticed it today, i will see if i can have someone look tomorrow afternoon or something. thanks xxx

if you have just had new tyres fitted the garage should fix them for nothing cos they havent balanced them right after fitting wheels back on

tammyBEARinggifts · 16/12/2004 17:43

no, but ive only had the car for 2, maybe 3 months now

jingleballs · 16/12/2004 17:44

it should still be under warrently then if u bought it from a garage, i'd take it back there and get them to do it for u, should be free then as it's their problem. (just chack how long the warrenty was for)

tammyBEARinggifts · 16/12/2004 17:46

its 2nd hand, and my dad brought it so he dealt with all the paperwork, which i do have though

OP posts:
jingleballs · 16/12/2004 17:49

well as was our one, but it was bought from a 2nd hand dealer so we got 6 months with it, was urs a private sale?

tammyBEARinggifts · 16/12/2004 17:50

i think so, think he said it was from a friend's mother or something like that. will have to ring him later and double check

OP posts:
jingleballs · 16/12/2004 17:51

oh right, if it's privatee obv u will have to go to a garage and pay (unless u've had new tyres recently) shouldn't be much thou, normally u can say if it's gonna cost less that £X then do it if it's gonna be more then ring me and tell me what needs doing etc..

tammyBEARinggifts · 16/12/2004 17:52

ok thanks xxx

please get it checked out tammybear. I don't want to alarm you but something simmilar happened to me years ago and the wheel came off. Dh had changed the wheel and put the wheel nuts on the wrong way round so they worked loose and the wheel came off. It was a very old car (even then) and I don't think it would happen to a modern one, but definitely get it checked.

ChristmasCracker · 16/12/2004 18:34

When you posted this Tammy i looked at it and thought "oh i'm sure it's the tracking", but not knowing a fat lot about cars i thought i'd probably be wrong and look like an idiot so i didn't post.

Anyway,it is the tracking

spacedonkey · 16/12/2004 18:37

sorry if i'm repeating what someone else has said, but try tightening all the wheel nuts and see if that makes a difference

had a similar problem once, went into garage in a panic, left feeling rather

tammyBEARinggifts · 16/12/2004 18:59

will it be safe enough to drive around in before i get to a garage?

go to the nearest garage tammy, and dont put it off, just in case

dont drive fast either, the faster you drive the more the steering wheel will shake.

maybe you can find out if the tyres were replaced just before you bought it, and where, then take it back there. they may then check the wheels for nothing

gscrym · 17/12/2004 09:20

Does this only happen when you steer? Does it happen when you're breaking? If it happens when you're breaking, your discs may be warped so they would need replaced. If it's only when steering then the chances are it'll may be the wheel bearing on the right hand side or possibly the track rod or the drive shaft. It does need to go to a garage unless you know a mechanic that you trust who would do it as a homer. If you don't get this fixed then it will cause your car further problems and it will fail an MOT. If it's the discs, you'll wreck your brake pads as well and have to get them replaced. You probably will need your tracking done as well as it could cause excessive wear on one side and lead to the tyres getting scrubbed.
