Nice restaurant in north London?

Am looking for a nice place to go for dinner with a couple of girlfriends, before I had DS we used to go to Soho but now it would take me too long to get to after his bedtime, so wondering if there is somewhere in north London that's nice.

Preferably by a tube so it's easy for everyone to get to. Between us we like most kinds of food but especially French!

where in london are you? Do you like north african food?

MegBusset · 02/03/2008 12:41

We are variously in Enfield, Crouch End and Southwark (hence the need to be near a tube!).

I love north African food although one of my friends doesn't like anything spicy...

just noticed that you mention Southwark

there is a great polish restaurant just near a station called baltic (74 Blackfriars Road, London, SE1 8HA)

I'm Polish but not much a fan of Polish cuisine but they are truly fantastic but quite pricey

MegBusset · 02/03/2008 13:26

I've been to Baltic (used to work nearby) and tis lovely indeed... but definitely too far south for me to get to now! (I'm the one in Enfield)

don't say I never do nothing for yer

I really like it, I used to go there a lot when I lived in Highgate 3.5 years ago. I am VERY hard to please as I am a chef and while not the greatest gourmet in the world I can tell when corners are being cut and it is rarely done here. It's also a great room, I think it must have been a Victorian Dance Hall attached to the pub, lots of art on the walls and a very good vibe.

Or if you really want to push the boat out may I recommend

and yes isn't it a beautiful website, (well done dh)

Limonia in Primrose Hill? (Greek, right next door to a decent pub) - 5 min walk from Chalk Farm station

Cotton's (Caribbean, very small but cosy and does great cocktails) - 5 min walk from Chalk Farm station, or The Mango Rooms (also Caribbean, also very good cocktails) 5 mins from Camden Town station

Shish - slightly upmarket kebabs and mezze, bar upstairs with music - opposite Willesden Green (there is also one on Old Street, 5 mins from station, nice, dark, Middle Eastern-themed bar downstairs)

Gaucho's Grill on Hampstead High St if you like great steak & cocktails, quite pricey, 5 mins from Hampstead Tube, a decent bar practically next door.

I'll think of more....

Are you talking about Singapore Garden?@AhhChewww - very nice, pricey though.

fleacircus · 02/03/2008 13:27

Either Eyre Brothers or Rivington Bar and Grill, both near Old Street. Hungry now just thinking about it.

oh God, this is a great thread
I also heartily recommend Konstam in Kings Cross

all the produce is from England. Cute chef visible from dining room, great atmosphere for ladies

MegBusset · 02/03/2008 13:34

Oh god, these all look lovely! I will email my friends and see if they can help me choose...

oohh all of these are great. Smiths steaks in the dining room are yum , but gauchos are even better. Except theyve stopped doing their amazing salsa verde .

How about Dylans in Cockfosters high st , a walk up from the station , great british/european menu. A bit pricey , but nice place. dylans

MegBusset · 02/03/2008 13:37

I don't eat meat so wouldn't go for a steak place. Funnily enough I have never been to Dylan's although I live pretty near and have been past it, I didn't really know if it was any good or not. Perhaps I can get DH to take me sometime -- I think it may be a bit far north for my Southwark friend!

Smiths does more than steak, there are some sample menus on the website

MegBusset · 02/03/2008 13:51

Smiths does look lovely, I have to say! Might be worth the extra travel time...
