Has this happened to anyone else? We were on the way to school, and I skidded on a crayon, fell over and baby kept on crying. Was too scared to look at him, but luckily nice lady invited us in and he is fine. She was a nurse so I got patched up - knee, hands etc. Now I'm too scared to use the sling again. What to do?

not happened to me (yet) but I can imagine it must really shake you up, you poor thing. Glad you are both ok and you have been looked after. FWIW its unlikely to happen again.

Thanks - did ring HV just to be sure. She doesn't seem v keen on slings.

Poor you - what a shock! It's never happened to me, but I have fallen down stairs whilst holding my baby - I ended up bruised, baby was fine!

As for the sling - it's up to you and how safe you feel. I know I've always felt safe, but if you don't feel safe, you're under no obligation to use the sling!

belgo · 27/02/2008 10:27

oh yes, megglevache, my pram very nearly got blown into the road one windy day - I would have preferred a sling that day!

Bramshott · 27/02/2008 10:29

Much better to fall with the baby in a sling and cocooned than holding it, or in the pushchair etc. I managed to tip DD2 over in the pushchair last week (ran away from me while I was looking after a fallen over DD1) - very scary!

morethanmum · 27/02/2008 10:30

You are all so nice, and sensible advice - dd was in her buggy and got hit by a car when we were crossing a road. Years ago, but she ended up with a burnt chin, and I had a broken foot. Maybe I should stay in until they can walk? ...

How scary! This has never happened to me (yet!) but it must really have shaken you up. You're probably safer falling over with a baby in a sling though than holding your baby in arms, if that's any consolation.

I hope you are both feeling better soon!

I fell last week, carrying 18 month old DD in arms and I'm pregnant. Managed to break fall sideways with elbow. DD's head was 1/2" off floor. I would of been much safer with a sling that day.

Seriously there is no 100% safe way to carry a child, cross a road or any of the other things we end up doing daily. You have to do what is best for you.

Ignore negative people who just critise a sling whatever the baby is doing. I find a baby in a sling ALWAYS gets comments both negative and positive as the baby is at noticable eye level, rather than most babies in prams at knee level.

chopster · 27/02/2008 10:38

glad you ok. Don't feel bad about the sling. I managed to throw dd out of her pram when she was still tiny. Luckily she was wearing a snowsuit and wasn't hurt, jsut laid on the path looking up at me slightly perplexed!

morethanmum · 27/02/2008 10:44

Ok. Will be brave and try sling (in company of someone other than horrified 9 yr old dd) again. Might practise round the house. And give the stilletoes a miss

Have just booked lovely hairdressing appointment to get over shock. Knee huge and swollen so wearing hideous baggy trousers so will look rubbish in trendy hair cutting place. Sigh.

I have droped baby out of a sling I cried for about 7 hours after that, was horrible, poor little DS2 Was in a rush getting kids out the door for the first school run I was doing on my own with him and the buggy would not open out, so I bent down to unclip it and he slithered out. He was only 3 days old and when I spoke to midwife she said that he was fine and lots of babies have worse trauma from being born Anyway, he is nearly 1 and he IS fine.

Fell over with DD on holiday as well, was walkign along and my foot got caught in a hole in the paving and I flew forward but managed to throw myself onto the other side and so she did not hit the floor. Put my back out, hurt my hip and bruised/grazed my hands knees and elbow with that one.

And that has reminded me of when I was waving my Dad goodbye holding DS1 and was pregnant with DD and fell over the doorstep and landed in a heap on the pavement

Is horrid, such a shock with the baby, hope you both OK????

PS. As a rule I wouldn't say I was that accident prone....

Bky · 27/02/2008 12:22

oh no poor you, don't be too scared to use the sling again though.

I feel over when DD was just over a week old, she was in her pram and I slipped on ice and feel to my knee's but didn't let go of the pram handles and tipped it as I fell, luckily it was a lie flat pushchair so she was strapped in and didn't fall out, I remember being absolutely gutted especially as there were loads of people around and not one person stopped to help.

Glad you are both ok.

Bky · 27/02/2008 12:23

Sorry about terrible typo's meant fell not feel.

squix · 27/02/2008 12:30

According to my GP (after a fall I had with 3 week DD) - 'Babies are surprisingly bouncy'

PotPourri · 27/02/2008 12:51

Pooor you. don#'t let it put you off using the sling. Definately safer than carrying hte baby in your arms, and in this windy weather it is safer than the buggy also. Happened to me once, shortly after I had heard of a newborn being crushed. But as long as you are not completely knackered (that mum was), then you are going to have shti hot reflexes to protect the baby (even if you end up hurt).

In short, woudl definately and have definatley used sling - it is much better for the baby as they are close to you.

LOL at West Coutnry lass - sorry, not that any of it is funny. It's just the way you tell it!!
