Moving to Dubai with a 14 year old

Hello everyone.. First time here and I'm looking for some help.

We have the chance to move from the UK to Dubai as my husband has been offered a job there. We are interested in going but my potential red flags are as follows:

  1. Will my 14 year old daughter settle? I've seen people comment on moving with younger kids but not teenagers. Has anybody any experience moving there with a teenager.
  2. We have a Labrador- is it too hot in the summer for him? Is it really not possible to let him run off a lead?
  3. Does anybody have any experience with sports clubs for kids? My 10 year old sone is an excellent footballer and plays in the UK academy system. is there any similar type of academies in Dubai? I've not been able to find anything.

Thanks very much in advance for any advice you can give.

Yeah - take your 14 yo dd to a place where women are treated as second class citizens.

SusanSHelit · 26/07/2023 19:26

You couldn't pay me enough to live in dubai and you most CERTAINLY couldn't convince me to take any daughter of mine. Absolutely atrocious country.

zurala · 26/07/2023 19:27

No. Don't take your daughter there! What a terrible idea.

HopelessEstateAgents · 26/07/2023 19:28

How would you work? How would you protect your daughter from the rampant misogyny? How would you reconcile with the human rights abuses?

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 26/07/2023 19:29

14 as in just about to start year 10 and GCSE’s? When are you planning on moving?

leaving aside all other considerations, it sounds educationally a bit of a disaster.

HopelessEstateAgents · 26/07/2023 19:31

Gosh yes and pulling your daughter out of school right before GCSEs. Your husband is mad and selfish to even suggest this. Does he always put himself first?

TrueScrumptious · 26/07/2023 19:34

The family I know who had a similar offer - they decided that the dad would go on his own, while the mum and DC stayed in the U.K.

gogomoto · 26/07/2023 19:36

No I wouldn't take a 14 year old girl there, nor would I move there as a woman or decent human being on humanitarian grounds. They offer money to bypass morals

ladygindiva · 26/07/2023 19:37

Not even Dubai but my parents worked in Oman when I was small but were sure to return before I hit secondary age for all the aforementioned reasons. Not a wonderful place for a teenage girl for a myriad of reasons.

CatsOnTheChair · 26/07/2023 19:38

Is there any scope for the 14 yr old staying in the UK, and coming out for holidays? A lot of families have teens in boarding school back home.

Run? In a fur coat? Not a chance in summer. Right now, it's 10pm, 38C, feels like 48C due to the humidity.

Suggest getting onto "Two Fat Expats" on facebook for answers based on experience.

Fizzology · 26/07/2023 19:39

That seems like an exceptionally poor choice for your dd and for your dog.

Puravida23 · 26/07/2023 20:03

Ok . I have lived in Dubai and my DD did her GCSE’s there. Here’s my take leaving behind all the humanitarian issues and other issues aside.
My main concern would be moving at year 10 to anywhere ignoring the fact it is Dubai. She may not settle and these years are crucial . We did move our elder DS at year 9 but were always comfortable we had a year to settle
That aside Dubai has a high pupil turnover so she will be one of a number of new children . Children there are very receptive to new people generally so hopefully she would settle.
The education whilst private I would class as outstanding/ good state rather than private. So you will likely notice a difference if coming from private and if you are I would probably stay there rather than move
I also think they have a lot of young teachers (I used to call them party teachers) who are there for the lifestyle and may not have as much experience compared with a lot of UK teachers. In saying that my DD walked away with excellent GCSEs so must be doing something right
It is really hot we had a golden retriever she struggled in the heat and it was only really very very early in the morning (sun rise) could we walk her in the summer. She loved the air con though.
They do have football academies as after school but not in the same league as the UK the level is improving though so my info may be out of date. It depends how good he is wether he will miss out. I did know someone whose son had a contract or something with one of the premier teams (had it from 6/7 years old!) and they eventually returned to the UK to let him pursue it when he was 12/13 as he would have missed the opportunity otherwise. Obviously playing/training is affected by weather as very hot but football is definitely a thing in Dubai.

I was going to recommend this too.

I agree with this. When u read with a 14 year old I was hoping it wouldn't be a daughter.

Dubai isn't even a country. Plus, no one is asking you to move to Dubai so your comment was unnecessary and irritating. The UAE is 10x better than the uk. It's safer and cleaner and most people are not miserable. *clears throat.

You really need to get off line and go outside and touch grass. Dubai is much safer for 14 year old girls than Anywhere in the UK
