Well, I've decided against getting a novelty ashtray for my mum, but she has to be the hardest person to buy for ever.

She:
doesn't do ornaments
doesn't like chocolate
still hasn't used all the smellies sis got her last year
drinks whiskey, but I always buy that for her
likes music, but doesn't really play CDs
likes modern art (but I am scared to buy a print)
id heavily into philosophy and psychology but already has about a million books on the subject.

so any great ideas?

does she like Alain de Botton?

hana · 12/12/2004 22:59

magazine subscription?
spa day out?
theatre tokens?
framed pictures of your dd/ds/family?

terryschonkyorange · 12/12/2004 22:59

Does she live in/near London - if so what about tickets to the Tate Modern? Likewise with concert tickets.

spacedonkey · 12/12/2004 22:59

get her Totality and Infinity by Emmanuel Levinas - that'll keep her quiet until next christmas Grin

terryschonkyorange · 12/12/2004 22:59

Sorry, cross post!

SenoraPostrophe · 12/12/2004 23:20

tate modern tickets would be a great idea if she lived near london (she lives east midlands).

I wonder if I can buy all in coach and gallery tickets?

SD - I would imagine she's read that (just looked it up on amazon. My own knowledge of philosophy is not good). Maybe not, but amazon don't have it in stock.

A thought: she also likes Asimov (because of his understanding of psychology).

\link{http://www.philosophersnet.com/magazine/\a subscription to the philosopher's magazine?}

moondog · 12/12/2004 23:29

No offence midnightmass, but why would anyone want a book about (or by)bloody Judi Dench!!

Spa day is a good one. I did that for my mother and she loved it. Mil will get the same this year.

I think that after 'un certain age' one likes experiences rather than things. My theory is that after 60 your house is filled with way too much STUFF anyway.

Carla · 12/12/2004 23:31

Good grief SP! I thought my mum was hard to buy for. No suggestions, but you have my every sympathy!

chatee · 12/12/2004 23:33

spacedonkey · 12/12/2004 23:33

moondog, have just read all of this thread and am delighted to say .... mum's getting Judi Dench's book! Think it's after a certain age....... Wink

spacedonkey · 12/12/2004 23:38

or there's the \link{http://www.lrb.co.uk/\London Review of Books} described as follows: "The London Review of Books has been dedicated to carrying on the tradition of the English essay. In this respect, it is not very different from one of the great 19th-century periodicals. It gives its contributors the space and freedom to develop their ideas at length and in depth. The leading writers, critics and thinkers who are regular contributors to the London Review of Books include Perry Anderson, Alan Bennett, Terry Castle, Jenny Diski, Terry Eagleton, Frank Kermode, John Lanchester, Hilary Mantel, Andrew O'Hagan, Tom Paulin, Adam Phillips, Jacqueline Rose, Stephen Sedley, Colm Tóibín, James Wood, Michael Wood and Slavoj Zizek."

Ooops sorry Carla Blush!!!
No really, love the woman, she's great, fabulous in the Bond movies mutters Moondog lamely trying to dig herself out of a large hole.
Spacedonkey, that is dead dead dead intellectual!
Just don't panic into buying crap like the nylon vibrating footwarmer my sister once bought my grandmother for Christmas. The look on her face as she removed it from the warapping, holding it gingerly between finger and thumb-!
Still makes me laugh to the point of tears!

spacedonkey · 12/12/2004 23:46

I reckon my mum would like a subscription to that too actually - they sound rather similar in their interests

GoodKingWestCountryLass · 12/12/2004 23:48

I agree with Moondog, experiences rather than things.

I have got FIL and his girlfriend a voucher for tea for two at the Ritz and a trip on the London Eye.

moondog · 12/12/2004 23:49
