Are we overcrowded? Chances of being re housed?

Hi all,

I currently live in a 2 bedroom flat with my partner and 2 step daughters.

I am currently expecting.

My step daughter turn 16 in August.

As far as I understand:

  • My child will "only count" from the age of 1?
  • The girls will be entitled to their own rooms over the age of 16?

Our kitchen, dining room and living room is all one open plan room. It's a 3rd floor flat with a balcony off this main room.

Will we/when will be classed as overcrowded? Do you think we will be re housed at some point? It's a housing association property as our local council doesn't own any council houses anymore, it's all housing association.

Thanks in advance and any advice appreciated! x

Baby would be expected to stay in with you for at least at year, but that's the best you can hope for. My brother has 1 son (16), 1 daughter (14), and a baby boy (3). Youngest is still in with him, oldest have to share with a curtain dividing the room. They have been on the housing list on the grounds of overcrowding for over 5 years.

Do your step children live with you all the time? Is it their main address?

Yes my partner has always had full and sole custody of them. They have always lived with us full time. They don't see their mum and she does not provide child support or anything. It's always just been us 4 (soon to be 5)

Depends a lot on which area you are in and how many are on the list too

Have you checked your council policy. My council went from owm room from 16 then bumped it to 18 its now 21.

Also even if they do say you need more room. The waiting list is likely to be years . If you can, you can look up your housing banding allocations policy and it will give you a guide on the banding and how long it is likely to take .
