DD 22, her boyfriend 25 and DGS 2 months currently live with her boyfriends parents and his brother in a 3 bedroom house. They are looking to get on the council housing list (Wiltshire area) and I just wondered what their chances are realistically, would that house be considered over crowded?

No it is no overcrowded. Children under 10 do not count and they count other spaces in addition to bedrooms as places that can be slept in eg living / dining rooms.

Two couples and the brother have adequate rooms.

No idea on wait times in Wiltshire but they won't be a priority.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 03/07/2023 14:10

They'd have to look at the individual councils social housing policy. Some local authorities are a bit more willing to help families than others.

Shitshowatthefuckfactory · 03/07/2023 14:12

They could certainly get themselves on the list, but from what you've said they wouldn't be classed as overcrowded so wouldn't be a high priority. So it'd likely be a few years of waiting.

What's their income as a couple?

Gobolino80 · 03/07/2023 14:17

@Shitshowatthefuckfactory their joint income is nowhere near enough to rent privately, they've looked in to that.

Is there any likelihood of her partner beginning to earn more in the near future, if he's presumably working full time?

If it's not enough for them to rent a 1 bed flat in Wiltshire then he must be on a very low wage. Can he look to increase his earnings/capabilities?

Gobolino80 · 05/07/2023 10:17

@Shitshowatthefuckfactory 1 bedroom flats are currently renting for £1200 a month where we live, he'd need to retrain for a wage increase and it's just not achievable at the moment.

Where are you? I've seen properties in Devizes, Trowbridge etc for £600 a month.

I live in a nice Wiltshire town and you could definitely get a flat for a lot less than £1200. That's Bristol/Bath prices currently. Would they consider moving to a different area within Wiltshire? You wouldn't have to go far to find something cheaper.

It's likely they would be entitled to help with their rent

Ds16dv · 05/07/2023 10:52

There is a housing crises. Its very unlikely they would be prority for council/social housing. Unless they were actually homeless . Then they would go into temporary accommodation. And be on the waiting list for a long time.

All areas of different so it's best to speak to the actual housing officer at the council.

Where I am children under ten do count, any child over the age of one counts as a person. Siblings of opposite sex under ten are allowed to share a room and siblings of the same sex can share at any age.
