My 6 year old ds really wants one and I'm saying no because I want him to enjoy more traditional toys and learn to love reading. How long have others held out for? Ideally I'd never have one. I hate the way children become so obsessed with them. Am I being unrealistic?

My boys age 6 and 3 have a PS1. We didn't buy it, it was handed down from my nephew when he got a PS2. My 6 year old is actually very good about being regulated on it. He is allowed to play after school if he has a friend over but not on other school nights. On the weekend ds1 and ds2 can play after breakfast for a couple of hours max if we have no other plans. Usually ds1 wants to do something else before the time is up anywayeither play football or go out on his bike. Ds2 is the one who wants to be on it all the time. But I think that is because when they play together ds1 tends to hog it, as naturally he is better so his turns last longer.
Ds2 is sometimes allowed to play on it by himself as a treat if ds1 is out at a party.

They are both getting gameboys for Xmas. These will also be regulated, but will be a godsend on the journeys when we visit dhs family up north.
Tbh I would prefer ds2 not to have one at the age of 3 and a half, but it is better for them to have one each than to listen to them squabbling over one console on a four hour journey.

serenity, sorry, my comment was really snappy and I apologise. Hardly had any sleep as baby cried most of the night so I was very ratty this morning. Sorry.
