Random - is it embarrassing to be 22 years old but told I look 14?

I’m a 22 year old student with a 13 month old little boy and I also work as a carer. For years I’ve been told how young I look for my age, particularly when I’m not wearing makeup I find. Funnily enough, when I was 14 I actually looked older than 18 but now I don’t make as much effort with my appearance and maintaining it 😂I have quite clear skin and a young looking face but would say I dress very smart. I’m quite a natural looking person, don’t wear makeup very often I’d say I look my age when I make effort with my appearance.

At work I’m constantly told that I look 12-14 years old and when I’m out places.

Is this embarrassing? Although there’s little I can do about it, I do get a little pang of embarrassment and self consciousness when people repeatedly tell me I look like a child when I’m a women.

just a random post to get peoples opinions on this as I’m bored, I know it’s not a mumsnet related post x

It's the norm on MN.
Everyone looks 14 and weighs 8lb but only when their hair is wet.

Well, I guess the only question you need to consider is are you embarrassed? Not much you can do about how you look.

I was once refused service in a pub when I was 24. I asked the barman if I could have it in writing.

Well according to the (numerous!) threads on here about the exact same issue, you shouldn’t be embarrassed because it is, in fact, incredibly common to look 10, 20, even 30 years younger than you are!

‘Yes! Im grateful for great genes!’ And move on…

or ‘yes! I have great genes! Have you considered fillers?’ If they dont shut TF up about it.

I misread this for you looking 44. Now that would have been embarrassing

make the most of looking 14- one day you will ask the shopkeeper whether he needs your ID for a bottle of wine and he will say: no need at all

I was always taken for being younger than I was. And I'd think, well when I'm 70 I'll only look 65 or less. Now 76 and people take me for being much younger. Not that it's ever bothered me. I'm more amused these days.

My son was refused to buy an 18 dvd years ago when he was 26. He had come with us and had not brought his wallet.

I've reached 60 now and so can sometimes get a cheaper meal as over 60's. Every single time I've asked for it I e been told it's only for over 60's. I've said yes I'm 61 and they clearly don't believe me and I have to show ID. One waitress told me well you're the youngest looking 60 year old I've seen. It made my day.

My DD is the same, 22 and just finished Uni. She works in a hotel restaurant and had to go behind the bar for something. Bar manager panicked and said he’ll get X because they can’t allow a 16 yr old behind the bar.

I used to have people coming to the door of my house, either sales reps or electioneering usually, and asking if my parents were home to talk to. Especially if I was in casual gear and not done up for work.

This happened up to and including in our 2nd home, that we owned, and I was late 20s/early 30s. I used to say I didn't know as their home was in city 2.5 hours away. Always a sudden backtrack to "are you the owner?"....which really only changed when I was about 35. Or also having to give my I'd if my food shopping had alcohol in it.

When I was about 20 I was was living on my own in London.

I was travelling home for the weekend and caught a bus to Waterloo. The conductor gave me my ticket and more change than I expected. I realised I had been charged a child’s fare without asking.

Then on a walk with my mum I went to buy cigarettes and I was refused.

I am short and was very petite (alas no longer), and I had very chubby cheeks.
I used to take my ID with me when I needed to buy alcohol.

You have to remember looking young doesn’t mean you are behaving young. But it’s annoying if other people treat you as a child. You will probably find yourself telling others how old you are very early in a conversation.

Its because your still so young. Come back in ten years.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 11/10/2023 11:01

That was me when I was younger - always looked younger then my age in my 20s and felt that I was not taken seriously in professional environment because of this . And despite what others will say, yes it can be embarrassing having to explain your age to people all the time .

Life caught up with me sometime in my 40s, early 50s and I definitely look my age now!
