For an average drying load of say, an hour, how much do they cost to run?

Sorry never calculated the cost, but can recommend tumbledryer balls (Lakeland/Woolworths) cut down drying time as does putting a dry towel in with the load.

I bought a tumble dryer with the highest efficency.

Ours costs loads.

Nice pun, scatty

Well, I have a friend who's an electrician, and apparently, modern tumble dryers use up much less than you think.

The real culprit is the common, everyday kettle. He has a piece of equipment (the name I forget) which assesses how much electricity a household item uses.

The kettle literally eats it up. They boil their water on the hob, now!!!

Oh I'm such a wit!

Kettles eh? Mine is on continuously when I'm in the house.

the equipment is an OWL

An electric kettle is less wasteful than heating a kettle on most electric hobs but a little worse than heating a kettle on a gas hob for the same amount of water. To make the biggest difference though, you should only boil the amount of water that you actually need.

They do have a gas hob, that's for sure!
