I'm considering this as another option, as it is cheapish to do and would be hard wearing I assume ?

It would be painted white or cream probably.

I haven't, but I do really like the look of it.

tiredemma · 20/02/2008 14:35

How do you do it? Does it glue to the wall or does it have to be nailed?

nickytwotimes · 20/02/2008 14:36

I am putting it on as we speak! Well, I'm skivving just now...
Had it in my old flat, painted cream. Looked fab - very New Englandy - and very hard wearing. I would highly recommend it!

We are having a bit of a trauma about how to do the stairs too. It's built in at both sides and is certainly not an attractive open stairway, but the painted walls just look scruffy and unfinished. I'd like to wallpaper it but know that grubby hands will soon mess that up too. I need some ideas about what to put on the bottom half that will be easily wipeable. Will watch this to see if anyone has some good suggestions!

fatzak · 20/02/2008 14:38

Any pictures too would be appreciated

You mount batons on the wall and use panel pins (thin nails) and a dab of No More Nails to attach the tounge and groove cladding. Then you put on a nice moulding at the top and your skirting boards. Time consuming, but, ooh, you'll be chuffed with yourself!

tiredemma · 20/02/2008 14:39

Emma- what about just plastering the wall and painting it?

fatzak · 20/02/2008 14:40

Is it hard to do up the stairs nicky?

nickytwotimes · 20/02/2008 14:44

fatzak, you need a mitre saw to cut the angles. It can be a fiddle...
Just had a browse online for a How to but couldn't see one. HOWEVER, was reminded that you can actually buy it in large panels already put together for you. I learned how to do it from a book (Readers' Digest ) btw.

nickytwotimes · 20/02/2008 14:48

A picture of some in a bathroom - sadly not mine!

nutcracker · 20/02/2008 15:09

Do you have to put batons on the wall ?? I thought you could just stick the clading directly onto the wall ???

I also thought you could stick it on with adhesive.

OP posts:
tiredemma · 20/02/2008 15:14

was you going to do it yourself???

nutcracker · 20/02/2008 15:17

Erm not sure LOL.

I am driving myself nuts at the moment, trying to decide what is best.

I have investigated having the it skimmed and although not majorly expensive, cladding would be cheaper, and possibly better with kids.

I have roughly workd out that the caldding panels would cost me about £100 and then whatever other bits and bobs on top.

Am sat here deliberating instead of tidying my house LOL.

nutcracker - it is well worth the hassle and not that hard to do as it just slots into place.
I did the walls of the caravan and stuffed the gap with insulation to keep it warm and to cut down noise. It is also pretty robust and my dc's hurtle themselves at the walls without too much damage (to walls or kids)

nickytwotimes · 20/02/2008 20:03

ooh, this threads still going.
You could stick it directly to the wall with No More Nails type stuff, but
a) it won't be as secure and
b) should you ever wish to remove it in the future, your wall is, technically speaking, buggered.

nutcracker · 21/02/2008 11:01

The wall are knackered anyway nicky, thats why I want the cladding LOL.

One more question, can i fit it standing on the skirting ?? My friend said you are supposed to take the skirting off and fit it behind ?

OP posts:
nickytwotimes · 21/02/2008 11:05

You are supposed to, but only because the cladding might protrude further out from the wall than the skirting would, iyswim. If you are painting it anyway, just use some caulk to fill in the tiny gap.
Good luck!

nutcracker · 21/02/2008 11:11

Ok, thanks.

My dad is coming to have a look for me later, so no doubt he will tell me if he thinks I am nuts or not LOL.
