Are H&M sizes the stingiest in the world?

Yesterday I bought a top in H&M one size bigger than normal because I'm used to their sizes being a little on the ungenerous side, plus I am in the early stages of pregnancy and feeling v fat. When I tried it on at home it was just laughable - could not have fitted me even if I was 3 sizes smaller. In a huff I tried on one of my old tops from River Island in my normal size and it fitted perfectly, so it's not as though I've suddenly ballooned.
Anyone else found this?

Find their kids clothes sizes difficult. My dd is nearly 4 & fits a coat 18months to 2 yrs - & she's tall for her age!!!

tangerinecath · 10/12/2004 13:36

Hi PN, glad it's not just me Grin

I love H&M's clothes but a lot of their stuff doesn't fit at all, it's completely the wrong shape for me, trousers especially. Their baby clothes fit dd perfectly though!

serenequeen · 10/12/2004 13:36

ime, the kids' clothes are either tiny or huge - i gave up on the womens' stuff long ago.

Have you tried their preg clothes - I got lots here whilst preg. Had to buy biggest sizes - but they lasted & still wear the tops & cardis now for around the house.

Not bought too many things for me from H&M, mainly childrens clothes. I do find their childrens trousers enormous on the waist and usually have to take them in. I quite like H&M, but I find sizes can be amazingly different between shops in general (adults and children too).

Don't take it to heart Pami, it's shops and their weird sizing in general, not you. Annoying though when your just pregnant and starting to change shape and feeling sensitive about it all -congratulations though, btw Smile

There young fashion range for women is for up to the age of 24 years apparently, which is why I have to buy the large sizes, when I'm only a 10-12! Obviously we all spread too much after that age.

PamiNativity · 10/12/2004 14:31

I'm feeling better already. The top was only £9.99 so they obviously only managed it by using half the usual amount of material.
I have no problem with the kids' clothes though - think they're great.

Well, at least your local H&M does maternity stuff [grumpy emoticon]. My mum happened to get me an H&M maternity top in Oxfam, size Large. It fits ok now at 18 weeks, no way will it fit at 40 weeks. Their t shirts are also tiny.

PamiNativity · 10/12/2004 14:40

Tinker - they don't! But I do go to their BB range (larger sizes) and have got some good stuff there in the past for maternity.
Can't believe that their stuff wouldn't fit you, you slim Jim! Makes me feel 100 times better!!!

i gave up on h&m when i couldn't get my arms into some of their tops! Blush

Tinker · 10/12/2004 14:46

LOL sq. There was a lovely pink 100% cashmere Jaegar short sleeved jumper in the local charity shop last week (I don't get all of my stuff from charity shops you understand). My size and about £3.50. Tried it on. It was all tight on upper arms making them looked like squeezed sausages. Gorgeous.

Slim Jim I wish pamina.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 10/12/2004 14:46

Um.... I've had no trouble with H&M tops. In fact I have one 10 when I'm usually a 12 and it fits perfectly...

PamiNativity · 10/12/2004 14:47

SQ, even my anorexic SIL is a size 10 in H&M!

Ohhh, Thank god for that. First day out shopping for trousers post pregnancy. Thought I was looking on the negative side by picking up a selection of size 18 trousers. Not a hope in hell of getting any of them on. I was not going to try on a 20 out of principle. Tooo depressing. By the time I got round to going past new look, decided that the lack of clothes I could wear was even worse than trying on a size 20 pair of trousers. So I did and they were huge!! Now fitting really rather comfortably (and loosely Grin) in a pair of 18's. Phew!! So glad to hear it is H and M and not fat old me!

raspberry to DCDO

PickasillyChristmasName · 10/12/2004 14:53

DCDO - I have some size 8 skirts from H&M. And they fit my sometimes Size 10 bottom fine.

JennisaurusUnderTheMistletoe · 10/12/2004 21:00

I can never get into their numbered sizes. I am a 14/16 in most shops, I was struggeling to get a 20 on recently. In their S M L sizes I am fine.

sophabaubles · 10/12/2004 21:02

i'm going to start another thread about this, what are the good shops for generous sizes?...come with me!

tigermoth · 11/12/2004 09:04

I find H & M sizes are all over the place - depends on the individual garment and as for the trousers, I always seem to be between two sizes -one too big and the other too small.
