Can you think of a mystery & suspense film I can show to 12&13 yr olds?

Trying to do a unit on mystery & suspense leading to them writing their own, and want to include some film or film clips.

Can you think of an appropriate film for this age group? One that will grip them. Film can be any age...

What about the harry Potter films? There is mystery in them...

FrannyandZooey · 19/02/2008 20:06

what about that one with Laurence Olivier

erm Sleuth that's it

I think the content is suitable? Not 100% positive...
I also think it was remade recently with Jude Law but have no idea if any good

picnic at hanging rock?

I saw this at school when I was 12 and thought it was amazing. It manages to build up a real sense of mystery and suspense even though the mystery is never solved.

Heated · 19/02/2008 20:10

I'm not a film buff so never heard of either of these but off to investigate.

Thank you ladies, keep them coming!

I saw that when I was about 12 skidoodle and it scared the pants off me! I was a delicate flower.

How about Strangers on a Train?

southeastastra · 19/02/2008 20:11

amazing mr blunden

PuppyDogTails · 19/02/2008 20:12

Indiana Jones films?

margoandjerry · 19/02/2008 20:12

The 39 Steps? Is brilliant. And about the right level for this group.

Or Rebecca? Or The Third Man?

Milliways · 19/02/2008 20:12

"The Others" is a good 12 rated movie??

PuppyDogTails · 19/02/2008 20:12

North by Northwest?

I'll shut up now.

Whizzz · 19/02/2008 20:12

How about any of the Agatha Christie TV ones??

PuppyMonkey · 19/02/2008 20:13

I'd go for a Hitchcock one - Psycho, Vertigo... any of them you can get clips of.

He's the master of suspense after all!!

FrannyandZooey · 19/02/2008 20:13

what about that thing...ooooh...ooh...by Priestly

An Inspector Calls

FrannyandZooey · 19/02/2008 20:14

An Inspector Calls

PuppyDogTails · 19/02/2008 20:16

Jaws?

Heated · 19/02/2008 20:24

Thanks F&Z, An Inspector Calls would be good but can't touch it as it's a GCSE text and colleagues wouldn't be happy if I poached.

Hitchcock is an excellent suggestion PuppyMonkey! (slaps head at not thinking of it before) - which is the most frightening/atmospheric one? Tough nuts my yr 8!

39 steps I like but maybe not scary enough for them? Don't know the 3rd Man or Rebecca very well but again, which do you think M&J? They are bright/savvy boys (no girls in the class).

Amazing Mr Blunden I don't know Southeastastra, can you tell me more?

I'm going to be busy but thank you sooo much!

The Others scared all of my DD's Eng Lit class in Yr8

margoandjerry · 19/02/2008 20:26

If it's boys I'd go for the Third Man. It's honestly brilliant - quite menacing as well which I guess boys will like.

Heated · 19/02/2008 20:29

Thank you Milliways & PuppyDogTails for The Others and Strangers on a Train; adding to my now extensive list

@ PuppyDogTails - me too! It scared the bejaysus out of me, but I still loved it.

LOL though that you thought that was scary and suggested Psycho - I'm still too much of a delicate flower for that

And Jaws? truly terrifying movie

great suggestion for suspense though.

Heated - Picnic at Hanging Rock might not work well if there are boys in the class. Not sure they'd like it too much.

Milliways · 19/02/2008 20:41

DD suggests "Stir of Echoes" but I think it may be a 15 cert?
