Come and criticise my new business advert

Eddas · 19/02/2008 09:25

I am going to start up my own bookkeeping business. I have written a flyer and need some opinions on it please. Feel free to criticise it, suggest improvements

I have an outlet for the flyers(DH works in a plumbing merchants) and will probably make up some business cards at some point. I may even put cards in local shop windows.

I would advertise in a local paper or something but I don't have any money to do that so I thought flyers was a cheap way to start things off I am hoping that I can get work through word of mouth too once I get going.

Thanks for any advice

So, here it is...........

I think you should take your phone number off the internet so click on the RED !!!!! in the box with your name and ask MNTowers to edit your post

Eddas, I don't know a lot about these things so feel free to ignore my comments
I don't like the £££££ or the your in capitals - just makes the advert, which sounds really professional seem a little less professional iyswim. If this is common in these sorts of adverts though, then it's fine.
The other thing I was going to suggest was using an email address other than your hotmail one if you can. (I assume you'd be using the address I have?). It would look a bit more professional, and you wouldn't be relying on a free email account.
Other than that, I'd use you!

Eddas · 19/02/2008 10:36

thanks SPB, so replace £££££££££ with Money? and just say your?

I was going to set up a different email address, just for the bookkeeping so that things don't get lost amounst the other stuff I get sent. How do I go about setting up one other than hotmail? [thicko]

Eddas

  1. Get a free phone number 0800 or 0845 that way you can take calls at home or on your mobile which is helpful if you are a one man band. I used www.uk2numbers.co.uk. I have it diverted to home number then get BT to divert it on to my mobile if it rings for more than 15 seconds.
  2. Set up a very simple website (one page) with this and a good photo on it (it can just be a stock photo it doesn't have to be you!) - it will cost virtually nothing if you DIY or about £400 if you get someone to do it for you I use www.1and1.co.uk for my website hosting and e-mail - they are cheap and reliable.
  3. The above will give you a 'proper' e-mail address so you can be www.janesmithbookkeeper.com and be email [email protected] or whatever
  4. join a local BNI or other business networking organisation as you'll get loads of business that way www.bni-europe.com
fym · 19/02/2008 10:49

oh and good luck

GooseyLoosey · 19/02/2008 10:53

Words sound fine to me. When you print it out, avoid putting lots of pictures and different colours in. The most professional looking fliers are usually the fairly simple looking ones,

fym · 19/02/2008 10:55

oh I should also say I have found BNI useful for the expertise of people there as well - I have a copywriter giving me advice on wording, I get my business insurances sorted as there is a specialist in the group, there is a PC guy a web guy etc etc - its a bit like having a buddy group if you get a good set of people!

Eddas · 19/02/2008 11:13

fym, thank you for all the advice. I might think about all of that a bit later on. TBH I was just wanting to start off small as I really don't want it to cost anything as I can't afford it to.

gooseyloosey, I may add a small picture but it will be black and white as i'll photocopy it.

it's quite scary really!

oh most of it doesn't cost anything!

the phone number was £9.95 one off fee and the web address is a few quid a year....

You can visit BNI for free as well!

you might want to try your chamber of commerce as they help with new businesses....

also try www.vistaprint.com as they do lots of free printing offers....
