HELP - Gas question, combi boiler

turquoise · 15/02/2008 21:37

Thick question, but:

I need to change a washer on a hot tap.

The hot water comes from a combi boiler, so to switch off the hot tap I've closed the water, heating return and heating flow isolating valves at the boiler.

Do I need to isolate the gas supply as well? I assume the gas is only used when the water is heating, so probably not, and I really don't want to start messing about with gas when I'm actually completely clueless what I'm doing - but I'm worried that if I shut off the rest, I should shut off the gas?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.

Whimper.

Though I guess I might know by now if there was gas seeping out.

This is what I really hate about being a single parent.

This and the talking to myself.

OK, I've asked DH (CORGI reg). He says you can turn back on the heating water valves etc. You only need to have turned off the mains water (e.g. stop-tap under sink), as water and heating supply water do not mix.

He also said that you might be better to find someone to help you change the washer if not sure what you're doing - it's not an easy job. I realise that this is probably easier said than done.

Good luck!

Oh and he also says that if your hot tap is dripping, with a combi-boiler system, and you can't fix it yourself, get it fixed asap as otherwise your boiler will fill with limescale very quickly - bad, bad news!

Oh, thank you and your dh!

I was having problems with the mains tap, seems to be stuck, which was why I had to turn off at the boiler. It did stop the water coming out of the bath tap (hot).

I will get a plumber in tomorrow, to look at the mains tap and he can do the washer too hopefully - just really didn't want to have to get an emergency one out tonight!

The main thing is though - I don't need to worry about the gas?

Thanks again.

No, don't worry about the gas or the boiler at all!

You can use the heating as normal as long as you turn the valves back on.

Will be going to bed soon, but if you have any more questions, I hope DH can help in the next few minutes

No, thanks - I can go to bed without worrying now, thankyou very very much (and your dh). I would have fretted.
