What was the picture on the most fiendishly confounding jigsaw puzzle you ever attempted?

I would have to say V Van Gogh's Cornfield with Cypresses - it's those whirly clouds, he was a genius but also completely barking. I did do the edges of an MC Escher, the one with the faces unpeeling in black and white but that was clearly impossible and therefore a waste of time.

Anyone care to raise me?

Can I move goalposts & do the NICEST picture ever? It was one of those seventeenth century elaborate Dutch flower and insect paintings, with microscopic brush strokes & details you wouldn't have dreamt were there if you weren't jigsawing it.

Made me think that doing jigsaws of paintings should be required History of Art curriculum.

MascaraOHara · 15/02/2008 14:39

It was a jigsaw of Salvador Dali's Torreador. It took me ages.

I would love to do an Escher one.

suzywong · 15/02/2008 14:42

yes, you do precisely what YOU want to do on MY thread, Bink.

yes indeed, I know what you mean, I am totally absosrbed by the VG brushstrokes, such an eye, I did some Tissot Impressionist puzzles too and the way that man represents dress fabric is amazing. It realy does allow the laylady to see into the techniques of an artist.

BTW, I was wondering if securing and framing jigsaws and hanging them on walls was frightfully naff, what do you reckon?

suzywong · 15/02/2008 14:46

My brother - the one that is a twat- gave me a tin of beans jigsaw one Christmas. The pieces were pictures of baked beans.
I spread the pieces on the table then realised that life is just too short.

Our worst was one that I got in a job lot form a NCT sale. It came in a plasitc box, but there was no picture.

My sis and I spent 3 hoiurs trying to do it woth dds, who lastde about 20 mins.

Turned out it was oneof those yucky cutsie dogs with bows in their hair.

southeastastra · 16/02/2008 16:14

the characters from Rainbow, it took me ages, bungle pieces all looked the same. i also tried the simposons but gave up. puzzles aren't really my thing . no patience.

suzywong · 18/02/2008 13:06

I was up til 1am doing the sky on my Vinnie VG one, it was beautiful when finished. I think I'll try a Mark Rothko or a Jackson Pollock next.

swirly pattern thing that seemed to be moving and gave you a headache to look at.

That was a great new year's eve that was

It was a picture of a tiger....was way too hard for me. It had 7,000 pieces.....I really became upset when I couldn't do it......waited for DP to come home and help me.....he smiled kindly and then put all the frosties back in the packet....

I did one with lots of pieces, that was a picture of an ocean liner type boat. The big picture was made up of thousands of tiny photographs, and each piece had about one and a half little photos on it. I did finish it. It took me ages and ages and it gave me many headaches.

No chance of doing a decent jigsaw now though. Ds2 would just trash it!

franke · 18/02/2008 13:18

One of those optical illusion things where you have to look at it with relaxed eyes and all of a sudden a 3-d image appears. Someone decided to make it into a jigsaw ffs. And then someone went out and bought it and gave it to me

Karen999 · 18/02/2008 13:45

Would love to take the credit but its a joke I heard!

suzywong · 18/02/2008 13:47

The only jigsaw I have ever failed at was a Victorian painting called 'The Wedding Breakfast' which had 4000 pieces. It wasn't the picture's fault, I just think 2000 is my limit.

We have a stupid one of a yacht race which is nothing but sea and a few random boats.

bran · 18/02/2008 13:58

SW why don't you buy a print of the jigsaw that you would like to hang? It wouldn't look so naff, but it would still pleasantly remind you that you did a jigsaw of that picture.

My nephews in Malaysia have a framed Disney jigsaw that they did when quite young. The first time they showed it to me they were so proud, but I instantly saw two pieces that had been mixed up. I had to bite my tongue soooo hard.

I haven't done a jigsaw in ages, but I love snowy ones. One of my favourites is only 1000 pieces and the picture is a naive Americana-style rustic cabin in snowy woods. I find it so soothing.

There is a jigsaw holder propped up in the study containing a jigsaw that I stopped midway through when ds arrived (nearly 3 years ago no). I should just throw it away as it hemmorages 2 or 3 pieces every month which get sucked up in the hoover so it's unfinishable now.
