Nintendo Wii for a 3yo?

chicaguapa · 12/02/2008 20:34

Do you think DS (3yo) would be able to play any games on it? He has a Leapster and manages to play on that. It's just that I would be using his Christmas money for it and it's a lot to pay if it's not appropriate for him.

no way, IMO - get a real football/cricket set/basketball hoop and save a fortune?

paros · 12/02/2008 20:41

why would you get one for your 3yo?
go online with him and play first songs karaoke on babytvchannel's website instead, then go outside and toss a ball in the nearest grassy patch

We got our wii when dc were 3 and 6 and they can both manage ok, depend alot on the child I would have thought. But we bought it for the whole family.

If you want to buy something just for your ds I would agree that there are much better things than a wii.

theboob · 12/02/2008 20:47

i was thinking of getting one for ds1(7)and dd(5)so i borrowed my friends to see what it was like ....i quickly changed my mind they could not work it and i was up and down helping them and the arguments were horrid i'm going to wait as i think mine are still a bit to young now

WestCountryLass · 12/02/2008 20:54

My DS is 6 and DD is 3 and she is really good at it, only on the basic sports games and Mario Olympics.

berolina · 12/02/2008 20:56

ds1 is nearly three, and I can't imagine him using one of those thigs for a good, good long while. Get him a like-a-bike instead!

lilyloo · 12/02/2008 20:57

we have one ds 6 is fine but dd 3 struggles to do any games and get's easily bored with it anyway, although she loves ds's nintendo ds, that much easier to use with stilus, however see you have leapster so i would wait a while yet.

We got our 3yo a Leapfrog clickstart from Christmas and she loves it. It has a QWERTY keyboard and a mouse and the games are pretty educational, but fun. She had the knack of the mouse within half an hour and she has really got to know her way around the keyboard and it has brought her on in terms of how many letters of the alphabet (and numbers) she recognises.

We got a Wii at Christmas and she doesn't show much interest. I'm not sure whether that's because she likes her own so much...

Good luck, I hope you make the right choice.

By the way, the clickstart was £50 and we bought 4 games at about £12 each. There's a few up for sale on ebay just now for a pittance

Three is a bit young. My 3.5 year old can't really play many games himself, he prefers to watch. DS1 is 5.5 and gets lots of enjoyment from it but it's strictly rationed. He plays it about one a week at the most.

JingleyJen · 12/02/2008 21:00

we got one for us.. DS1 will be 4 in April and he loves it, plays loads of games.. I guess it does depend on the child.

LyraSilvertongue · 12/02/2008 21:03

We got ours for us, not the DC, but we've got some kiddy games for them (Happy Feet, Mario and Sonic at the Olympics).

pooka · 12/02/2008 21:05

No, don't get one for your ds. Not at that age.

We bought one a couple of weeks ago. dd and ds don't know, and I really don't think they'd be interested (4.5 and 2.5 years).

Wilkie · 12/02/2008 21:11

Get him outside playing games, get him books to read inside, FGS please don't get him a bloody Wii so he can spend hours staring at a TV screen

LyraSilvertongue · 12/02/2008 21:15

It is possible to play outside, read books and play computer games. Computer games aren't a replacement for everything else. Mine play on hour for about an hour a week at the most. Plenty of time for running about and kicking balls.

LyraSilvertongue · 12/02/2008 21:17

Play on ours, rather.
Having said that I do know a boy (6) who spends all his free time on computer games. It's really sad. He doesn't really know how to play proper childhood games.

Wilkie · 12/02/2008 21:21

Lyra - I wasn't saying ALL people let their kids play on computers all day every day but I know a fair few and it makes me

But to the OP, a Wii for a 3yo is excessive and unnecessary IMO

LyraSilvertongue · 12/02/2008 21:24

I know, wilkie, I was just making the point that not all kids who have games consoles are couch potatoes who don't go out to play.
My DSs tend to play on the Wii after being out and about in the park for several hours. It helps them wind down.

chicaguapa · 12/02/2008 23:39

Ok. Thanks for the responses. I have DD too who's 6 and has played on one before and loved it - which would give DS the incentive to use it. He already plays on the CBeebies games and has his Leapster.
I was just wondering whether I could justify splitting the cost 50/50 from their accounts. It's always DD that wants things so I use her money and then DS seems to get as much enjoyment from it and then I feel guilty that she's paid for all of it. But it's a lot of money to take from DS' account when he might not play it.

my dd is 3 and used her friends and loved it had so much fun i think they are great and you can all have fun the bowilng and tennis are great and my dd has a nintendo ds and loves it but also loves going to the park and playing in the garden i think people think that if you get your child an electronic game you dont let them outside lol not the case all ok within reason imo xx get one you will have more fun than him i got a b in the highschool musical game i was really pleased haha xx

HeatherMills · 12/02/2008 23:59

no not appropriate at all

LyraSilvertongue · 13/02/2008 10:11

Split the cost. DS may be a bit young now but he won't be in a year's time. Not fair to make DD pay for it all.
