AIBU to complain about being suspected of shoplifting?

Was in tkmaxx other day and suspected I was being followed by security guard. I noticed a security guard come into the shop just after I arrived and felt like I was being followed from a distance so decided to dash up to the second floor to see if he'd follow. And just as I expected he came up just after I did and hovered by the stairs. Not long after I paid for an item and proceeded out the shop when the alarm beeped and a second later an assistant asked to look in my bag, asking if I had anything with a security tag on which I didn't but just the item I bought and some food shopping. She said ok that's fine. But the previous time I was in a few day's earlier when I was in there I felt I was being followed but didn't get stopped. Not done anything wrong but I was in the store a few days before the first incident where I felt I was being followed. I'd bought a jumper a few months ago that I'd shoved in my wardrobe and forgot about. Upon taking it out recently I noticed the security tag was left on. So I went to tkmaxx to see if they could remove it. I walked In went straight to an assistant who said I couldn't get the rag removed as I didn't have my receipt. I've changed banks recently so cannot find proof that way. I was worried that the alarm would go off when I left and she said I be ok. But since I've been followed and had my bag searched since. Surely if I was being watched on camera they would have seen I didn't take anything. I work in retail in the same town a I don't want my store to get wind of being suspected of theft when I've done nothing. I recon this wouldn't have happened if I hadn't taken the top in with the tag on. Should I complain to tkmaxx head office about this or just brush it off as I've done nothing wrong?

So you want to complain about someone doing their job? The alarm went off, they checked your bag and went on your way. What would your actual complaint be?

You work in retail but don't understand the importance of receipts or security guards? Yeah right...

this . The amount of clothing that is stolen from shops is obscene.

Well it's not a surprise they can't remove the tag without a receipt or that they'd check a bag if an alarm went off. I don't see what you would complain about.

Seems like you've marked your own card by taking that jumper in. Unfortunately, that may have flagged you as a 'person of interest' shall we say.

The trouble is, because you suspected you were being followed, it would have changed your behaviour and body language, which would have made you look all the more suspicious.

I'd leave it a couple of months before you go in there again.

You took an item in with the tag still left on but haven’t got the receipt or proof of purchase. Yeah dodgy as hell

Bridewel1 · 20/03/2023 15:41

Yes it does seem dodgy but I always get the receipt but must have binned it as I was intending to keep it, yet forgot about it after shoving it in my wardrobe in the carrier bag firs while. Yet I didn't expect to find the tag still on which the assistant should have removed.

There'd be no point in having security tags if you could just wander up to an assistant and ask them to remove it for you without proof of purchase.

GingerBoot · 20/03/2023 15:54

To be fair, I've gotten home with new purchases to find tag still on. In one case, I had actually thrown the item into my suitcase as I was about to go on holiday and didn't find the tag until I was abroad. So this bit seems feasible.
However, the convenient change of bank accounts at same time does make it sound a little dodgier. I'm not sure, but surely you would still be allowed access to your past banking history even if you've changed banks. Yes, sounds like a lot of hassle, if possible at all, but if you're really that worried about your job and reputation, it might be worth looking into to prove purchase?

It's quite easy to ask them to look it up on their system, all you need is the date, approx time and your bank card details. If you work in retail, you should know this. Or ring up your either new or old bank to get a duplicate statement, it's really not difficult
