Tipping Hairdresser

This probably seems really odd but I'm going to the hairdressers for the first time in about 5-6 years on Saturday, and I'm wondering if I should give a tip? Last time I went I was 15 or so and my mum always paid, and I'm not sure if she tipped or not. I'm going for a cut and blow dry, and it cost £32 but I've paid online so I can't just give £40 and let her keep the change. So should I just give her £5 or is that not enough? I'm probably overthinking this but I don't want to seem rude😂.

Thanks in advance x

£5 would be plenty. £3 would probably be fine too, its roughly 10%. My hairdressers can accept tips on a card so it's not as awkward as handing over coins.

Thank you! That's why I was think £5, it's not as awkward as coins, if I pay inside next time I'll see if they take tips via card.

You don’t need to tip at all. But if you feel they do a great job then £3 is about right or for an outstanding job £5 is generous.

Take some tip money only if you’d like to and then wait and see how it goes on the day.

Enjoy your haircut!

I wish this tipping wasn't such a thing. I wouldn't tip at all. But if they do a really good job can't you just give cash on the day.,

I don't tip the hairdresser normally, though the one I go to is self employed and sets her own rates. My thinking is, if you want the extra £2, add it to the price; I'm not faffing through my purse looking for change for a tip. Also, they are normally earning something like £25 an hour, which is more than I make, so why should they get a tip?

If it was a salon with fully employed staff who don't set the rates and just churn out haircuts, I might give a pound or two but again, its just a faff I couldn't really be bothered with.

Salon junior who is washing hair, making tea and learning - yes, I would be happy with the faff to tip them.

i rarely tip, the stylist is charging good money, so I tip the student who washes my hair

yogaretreat · 20/03/2023 14:51

I tip the salon junior £2-3 as they are on rubbish money and £3-5 for the hairdresser

Totally agree with you
if places want a tip or service charge stick it on the price ! And be transparent
it frustrates me as someone not earning much ( non tipped ) to be expected to give money to people probably earning more than me
wish the list price was the price you were expected to pay ! rather than some confusing etiquette

I don't tip my hairdresser.
