Friend's cat brought this fledgling bird in today - no chance of finding nest or parents - does anyone know what species of bird it is please? Or any tips on what to feed it? Has already had pipettes of water etc and doing well. Thank you for any info.

Maybe mealworms from the pet shop, dried or live. No idea what it is but very cute!

I think it's a pigeon. They are quite ugly as babies.

It looks like a pigeon

ODFOx · 19/03/2023 23:34

I think it's a squab too, though it has an odd beak. Mealworms are a good shout, some seed ( soak it to soften), sweetcorn.

It's a baby wood pigeon and will need tube fed please contact a rescue I have reared a few if you want to try your self I can advise but will need special hand rearing formula syringes and soft tubes as there parents produce a crop milk that they are fed on no way give meal worms or sweetcorn it won't be able to digest them

def pigeon. Chick crumb in warm water to runny porridge consistency, let it cool a bit to feed, maybe mix in some peas, chopped lettuce or strawberries if you’re feeling adventurous. Don’t give worms of any sort. I feed to fledging using a water bottle with a marigold glove finger over the end, cut a little cross in it for the food to run out, they shove their whole head inside the glove finger, back up into the bottle - so you need more than the fingers depth of food mix so they can get it out - like they stick their heads down their parents throats. You’ll probably need a rubber band to stop it pulling off and the porridge going everywhere. They a little happy dance when they see the bottle coming, once they’ve worked it out. This is very mucky but they like to get a wash, I just put mine under the tap after each meal, seems enjoyable. Beware as they get picked on by wild pigeons once they’re grown, they usually end up pretty tame and stick around.

They take a fair bit of time and effort with regular feeding and lots of mess, so palm it off to a rescue if you can and if you ever want to eat pigeon again but it will probably survive. I’ve grown them from pink blobs, they’re pretty hardy.

Please contact a local animal rescue or take to a vet as it will need a correct diet and antibiotics as cat saliva carries a lot of bacteria and without antibiotics it will die

Baby pigeon. Contact your local wildlife rescue, they probably won't take it themselves but they might know of one or more local pigeon blokes who would look after it or at least offer advice.
