Hi everyone,
Me and my OH are considering a move to the coast not too far from Newcastle and I'd like to know what Blyth and Ashington are like. Does anyone live there or have family there that could tell us a little about the area? Things like the best areas or areas to avoid.
Thank you 😊

Thanks 🙂 I've also looked at Amble but I'd rather be closer to Newcastle and be able to reach Newcastle fairly easily by public transport. There's very little for sale that would suit us in Whitley Bay or further south.

I wouldn't move to Blyth or Ashington. What's your budget? I'd recommend Whitley Bay, Tynemouth, Cullercoats, Monkseaton, parts of North Shields for good transport links into Newcastle and close to the beach.

SandieJ · 12/03/2023 16:05

Mainly because we want reasonable public transport links to Newcastle, want to be close to hospitals and want to be close to the sea. We're looking in the region of 250k but we're looking for a few specific things.

Thank you 🙂 We're holidaying in Whitley Bay again this year so we'll be checking out some other areas too.

Have a look at Cresswell

SandieJ · 12/03/2023 16:12

Thanks 🙂 We're looking for 3 bed detached with garage no work needed, except maybe a lick of paint, for a max of 250k. Would like good public transport links with Newcastle, close to the sea and not too far from hospitals.

I grew up in Amble but now live in Ellington and it’s a lovely village - there are transport links to ashington etc but no train station here , the new rail links are coming next year connecting ashington again which will be great. We live in a new estate and for your budget you could get a 4 bed detached which is what we have - we do have cars

I go swimming at Blyth Beach. It's got a fantastic chip shop and coffee shop right there, and some nice houses nearby. A friend's parents live right there, and love it for walks by the sea.

Lots of new build estates around ashington and ours is wayside point - the wansbeck hospital is close by as is Cramlington hospital and both excellent , doctors surgery’s have usual issues these days. Ashington is a bit run down but we tend to just go there to visit the supermarket and head to morpeth or Alnwick for ‘shopping’

Thank you 🙂 I'll have a look at Ellington.

Ellington is ok. Avoid Lynemouth like the plague though Wink

Yeah I wouldn’t want to live that side but they do have a fantastic Chinese takeaway 😁

What about this in North Shields? Close to metro, not far to the sea, hospitals nearby. Is detached, with garage and under budget.

Blyth is improving steadily now since the 1980s pit closures without any infrastructural support long term strategy of guidance or hope for local folk. Unsurprisingly that parasitic drug groups infected the population. Hope of business investment dashed repeatedly, most recently with battery factory resisting to support an ailing politician hasn’t helped. Against these odds, Blyth folk are getting some semblance of confidence back and the region is turning in the right direction. For context, I live and work in the South East with a holiday home near Blyth and a boat in the harbour. I far prefer near Blyth as a home to the south east, and with looming retirement, will move into the town, near the glorious harbour.

GNFS1 · 28/10/2024 11:19

@Plot72, we loved Ridley park in Blyth. Really lovely and the beach is nice as well. We’re in the South east and would like to retire to Northumberland.

Mairzydotes · 28/10/2024 12:54

Blyth and Ashington are both rather deprived and run down town centres surrounded by housing estates. A lot of the houses are so far from the town centre I imagine residents drive elsewhere for amenities.

Blyth has recently had some episodes of flooding in heavy rain, in the town centre and Spine road. There is also always a lot of traffic, as there are only a couple of roads in

What about Bedlington? Very residential.

Turefu · 28/10/2024 15:12

Both Blyth and Ashington are getting train stations re-open, it’ll help the towns.

Taylormadeship · 17/09/2025 13:09

Saw this post and looking to move to Northumberland- looking in between Amble and Ashington- what is Ashington like now? Any better?

Taylormadeship · 17/09/2025 13:10

It depends what you want from it?

Somewhere to live where you can afford to buy a house it and Newbiggin aren't too bad, but I suppose it depends what you are used too.

I lived in Blyth for years and loved it, but there is a ton of crime.

alloutofcareunits · 17/09/2025 16:33

Ashington is known locally as Ashghanistan. It might have improved over the last decade but it’s honestly one of the worst places I’ve been. I used to cover all of Northumberland working in Social Services, I’d honestly avoid it if possible. Sorry if I’ve offended anyone living there, maybe it’s improved…
