PenelopePitstops · 08/02/2008 01:23

there is a view from some small mided people that it refers to council house and violent

but i haste to add this is not my opinion

Lauriefairycake · 08/02/2008 01:25

it means different things to different people - on here some people find it very offensive

i don't find it offensive - in fact one of my favourite words is chavtastic - in my head that means someone wearing lots of ghetto-gold, pink juicy tracksuits complemented with Burberry accessories and with a fanta tan..........

But thats only in my head.

kutilputil · 08/02/2008 01:26

but why C>H>A>V is it an ab for something?

juliet123 · 08/02/2008 01:27

I thought the men were burburry wearing unemployed medallion men, women are more vicky pollard, shouting, dress their clothes in burburry, live off benefits in a council house, big mouthed. I am quite possily wrong.

juliet123 · 08/02/2008 01:27

Not meaning to be offensive, I blame the tv.

MrsEaves · 08/02/2008 01:33

I thought it was two places put together with Average on the end, either chatam or chetenham, i don't know how you spell either, sorry.

kutilputil · 08/02/2008 01:45

the plot thickens...i thought there was a simple universal answer to this but its more complicated than that! i dont remember hearing this phrase 10 years ago....where does it originate from and when huh?

OP posts:
MrsEaves · 08/02/2008 01:51

I think it came from a group in a london suburb, a Massive, or whatever.

Then it got in the papers and god, it means anything now.

carol3 · 08/02/2008 01:52

I htought it originated in Cheltenham but apparently not en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chav

carol3 · 08/02/2008 01:55

sorry just read it all, cheltenam average refering to cheltenham ladies college name for young men of the town lol

blossomsmine · 12/02/2008 23:56

Right, well this is going to confuse you even more I live in an area which is full of travellers (gypsies) and since i was a little girl the travellers always greet each other with....."Dick eye Chavvie" make of that what you will!!

expatinscotland · 12/02/2008 23:57

aren't they neds?

my pal in NI says they are 'spides'.

MrsMattie · 12/02/2008 23:58

Funny - when I was growing up 'chav' or 'chavvy' was a really cockney way to refer to kids. Not offensive at all.

expatinscotland · 13/02/2008 00:02

i thought it was a Geordie word: charvers.

we never had it up here till a few years ago.

thugs are neds up here.

Tinker · 13/02/2008 00:02

Hersham Boys has "Dick eye chavvy" in the lyrics. What's that? 1979?

IorekByrnison · 13/02/2008 00:05

I have a friend who says she first knew the word in the 80's in South East London as a verb "to chav" meaning an act of extremely petty theft.
