Probably not the right place but here goes - anyone know how best to uncrumple a net fairy skirt?

Because I regularly had my 3 nieces around when they were little, I set up a dressing up box for them with various fairy wings/wands/bits n' bobs, old shiny tops of mine they could wear as dresses, that sort of thing. I also had 2 fairy skirts, basically a thick ribbon belt with 2 layers of net gathered onto it and little flowers and bows sewn on.

Anyway, dd now of an age to appreciate dressing up, I hauled it out this morning as she was demanding to be a fairy (damn you OH for letting her watch Nick Jr first thing in the morning!) and found that in the intervening years (nieces now 16, 15 and 13!)the skirts have got crumpled up to buggery...

Would anyone have any idea of how best to get them straight again (or if it's even possible?) As I made them myself I have no idea if they can be washed or not, I didn't look at the fabric label when I bought the stuff...

I'm guessing ironing's a no go, they look like they'd melt - would wetting them and straightening them as they dried do the trick, do you think?

Cheers

hang them up in a steamy room?

Nbg · 07/02/2008 09:58

Steam.

Thats all I can think of. Hang them in your bathroom and run a full bath of red hot water.

hang them up over the bath as its running or in the airing cupboard if you have one.

or you could mist them with water and hang over a radiator turning it so they dry evenly

If it is nylon net then it washes up a treat lovecat.
Try hand washing it, let it drip dry then iron on the coolest setting with a damp teatowel between fairy gown and iron.

I think you could iron them on the lowest setting of your steam iron or just hold the steam iron over it when it's hot and steaming.

Am sure I had this problem with our old dressing up clothes and just ironed them on wool/ silk setting.

Ah yes - that was it, they were under a damp teatowel!! Ironed on a medium setting.
