This is probably really obvious, but I'm b*red if I can work it out, so please, someone, help me:

How do I change the default page setup in Word to be A4 rather than US letter?

I'm using Word for Mac if that makes any difference.

I only know about PCs, but if it's the same you would go to File -> Page Setup -> Paper -> Paper size to A4, and then click on the "default" button on the bottom LHS. I think that's right!

MariNativityPlay · 03/12/2004 11:34

Go to FILE, then PAGE SETUP. Click on the PAPER tab to change it to A4 (from letter, presumably)
then you need to click the DEFAULT button.
A message should say, Do you want to change the default settings for Page Set-up? This will affect all new documents based on the Normal Template. Click yes.
That works on my PC, Frogs, hope it does the trick for you.

MariNativityPlay · 03/12/2004 11:35

An eminent scientist manages to say the same in less than half the words. Respect, tinselly one!

frogs · 03/12/2004 11:37

I don't have a PAPER tab under page setup. Bum. Knew there was something missing...

But there must be a way of doing this on a Mac, surely?

OP posts:
TinselTamum · 03/12/2004 11:39

Why thenk you Marina ;)

Sorry frogs, I can't imagine how you would do it without that bit!

Roisin · 03/12/2004 11:43

If you go into View, then Header and Footer, then the H/F toolbar gives your page setup options too ... well it does on mine!

HTH

MariNativityPlay · 03/12/2004 11:47

Oh dear Frogs, I've just checked our Macs and as I suspected, they don't have Word on them anymore, just music software. Sorry!

frogs · 03/12/2004 11:53

I have some page setup options under Header and Footer, but nothing that would change the paper size. Humph.

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 03/12/2004 11:57

What do you have under file, page setup then?

frogs · 03/12/2004 12:04

Under page setup I've got various options as dropdown menus, including one to change the paper size, but no obvious way of changing the default.

popsycal · 03/12/2004 12:06

oooh i think i knwo this...giev me a minute,,,,,

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 03/12/2004 12:06

This?

popsycal · 03/12/2004 12:08

when you go to page setup and have changed paper size......do you not have a 'default' button in the bottom left of the pop up?

popsycal · 03/12/2004 12:10

if you do, click on default after changing paper size and it iwll save it for the future (your 'normal' template)

PaRumPumPumScum · 03/12/2004 12:13

Hi frogs. I have a mac and this works for me:
Go to page set up
pick A4 in the paper size drop down menu
and then
pick save as default and in the settings drop down menu.
HTH

frogs · 03/12/2004 12:13

Alas, no default button.

I may be flogging a dead horse here, as I'm not using the most recent operating system or version of Word, which is no doubt what I would be told if I could be bothered to phone a helpline.

If there is anyone else out there using Word X for Mac on an iMac running os X v. 10.1.5, do let me know if you have found the answer to my conundrum!

Thanks for all suggestions, anyway!

OP posts:
PaRumPumPumScum · 03/12/2004 12:14

doh- not sure that's clear
There's an option in the settings drop down menu to sav as default, is what I'm trying (badly) to say.

popsycal · 03/12/2004 12:16

do you have anyway to change your 'normal template' ????
an you search on the help facility for that?

PaRumPumPumScum · 03/12/2004 12:18

So to recap
In page set up mini window
choose A4 from page attributes
then save as default from settings

PaRumPumPumScum · 03/12/2004 12:21

Any luck?

frogs · 03/12/2004 12:23

Not in my version, sadly, PRPPS.

I suspect this is a glitch which will have been sorted out in new versions. The answer, as with most Mac problems, is probably going to involve forking out for an upgrade. Sadly the most recent version, excitingly titled "Panther" involves completely reinstalling your hard disk, and frankly, I can't be arsed.

I do wish Mac would support their products for slightly longer, though -- my setup is only three years old, but they make you feel as if you're still riding a penny-farthing. I had a similar problem installing a new printer recently, and the problem (it emerged) was that NO printers currently available at Jigsaw were compatible with my system. Anyone would think I was still using a 486 or something...

PaRumPumPumScum · 03/12/2004 12:25

sob! really hoped it would work as my page set up doesn't have default button either. Best of luck finding the solution, frogster.
