So.....Lottie has has 1st ever school play tomorrow at her nursery. Very much looking forward to it. Got home tonight, charged up camcorder and the digital camera. D comes home and says he's been informed by fella's at work that you can't take pictures or film your child at their school play, at least not without written permission from all other parents.

What's that all about? Where was I when that bit of information was handed out?
Any experience of this? And your opinions as well if you so desire. Would be interested.

Personally, a) I'm gutted if that's the case and b) FFS - that's ridiculous.

Yours an outraged (unless I'm wrong) TC

Oh, TC, we've had a thread about this recently - it's not necessarily the case at your school, don't panic! Hang on, I'll try to find the thread for you.

Thanks Blitzen, I wasn't aware of another thread.

Here you go, TC - some schools/LEAs are banning, some aren't. Ring Lottie's school before you go and find out. You will probably be OK to take still pics even if vids are banned (I know it's not the same but at least it's a record.)

Fingers crossed!

(btw where are the pics of her riding? Have you put them up yet?)

(This is Janh btw but I think I may change back - bit invisible this way!)

You'd have to check if this is true or not, but my sister told me this evening that it is not actually illegal to film or photograph your own child in a school play. If another child gets in the picture too it isn't your fault. Another case of schools being over-zealous methinks but I can't for the life of me see why. Surely the only adults allowed in to see the play will be other parents and the chances of them using any pictures for immoral purposes must be slim.

btw Thomcat last Christmas we videod dd as Mary, no problem...this is just insane...when you go in to film it why don't you stand at the front and ask if anyone objects to you videoing this...bet I know what their answers will be...hope you can!!!!

My dd was in a schools' dance festival earlier this year at a local theatre. We were told we couldn't film them etc which was a bit annoying but I thought 'well ok, it's a public place, anyone can buy a ticket, their names and schools are advertised....' We were offered an 'official video' for £12. What a rip-off! When it finally arrived it was the most amateurish bit of film you ever saw. All the heads were chopped off and we only saw a quick glimpse of dd because she is so small for her age lol!

That is really annoying, pixel - if they're going to charge for it they should at least make it a decent video with everybody visible on it.

The school nativity play is a different thing though - there is a post on the thread I linked to before about an estranged father finding his family through a school video and attacking them . It isn't just about perverts or making money.
