Help - Storage heating stopped working and house is freezing!

SpringCrimboTurkey · 02/12/2004 21:19

Oh My God, I need some suggestions and quick!

I put the storage heater on (no central heating) at about 6 o'clock as it was getting a bit nippy -just got up to turn it up a bit and there is nothing coming out of it...................dead as a dodo.

Now although DP and i can put up with the house being cold until tomorrow - DD is a different story as she is only 4 months a never ever keeps a blanket on her in the night.

What am i going to do - it is the only storage heater that worked in the whole house

Have you got a huge 24 hour tesco or something near you where they might sell a convector heater with a thermostat?

JJ · 02/12/2004 21:23

Don't panic! Go to bed early and let her sleep with you. You'll all be nice and snuggly!

KatieMaChristmas · 02/12/2004 21:24

Could it be a fuse??(in the main box)

JJ · 02/12/2004 21:25

Oops, and stuff some warm clothes for her to wear tomorrow in the bed with you guys so they're not freezing when you get up and go to change her.

SpringCrimboTurkey · 02/12/2004 21:25

No the only place that seels storage heaters near by is Homebase and that shuts at 9.
Plus DP has got the car at football training so couldn't go anywhere anyway!

Oh no, am panicking now

The only reason we didn't replace the other ones is because we are moving so didn't see the point.

KatieMaChristmas · 02/12/2004 21:34

Hot water bottles....
A brick in the oven...then wrapped in a towel
Any fireplaces?

noangel · 02/12/2004 21:34

Any rellies close by could lend a heater? ring dh on mobile - get him to collect it?

pixiefish · 02/12/2004 21:35

put the cooker on and open the door- if that's practical/possible. the only other advice I can think of is to go to bed and take your dd with you and your body heat will keep her warm. remember that if she gets cold you need to warm her up with your body before putting any extra clothes on her as you'll just trap the cold if you don't warm her first.
failing all this is there anywhere you can go and stay tonight?

Mirage · 02/12/2004 21:36

This may be a silly question, but when you say that you turned it on at 6o'clock,did you mean 6pm last night?I only ask because they need to charge up overnight normally & then let heat out during the next day.(unless you are on a cheaper daytime tariff or they are combination storage/convector heaters).

If you did put it on as normal & it is just a storage heater &there is no heat,it can only be 1 of 2 things-the fuse as has already been suggested or the element inside. All they are really is an element surrounded by 'bricks'which store the heat ready for use,so theres not a lot technically that can go wrong with them. What make is it? If it is a Creda one I still have the manual for mine & might be able to help a bit more.

Is there a 24 hour Tesco or Asda near you-they often sell fan heaters cheaply.

Hope you get something sorted out.

SpringCrimboTurkey · 02/12/2004 21:36

No, none of those. God now i know why we are moving!

All family have central heating and no heaters.
Don't posses a Hot Water Bottle nor a brick.

Think i will take JJ's advice and put DD in with us so she is all snugly and warm - she shouldn't get cold like that should she?

Luckily she is quite warm bloody and is warm 99% off the time.

Thanks - i think the problem is because it has been so cold lately i have had it on all day today so maybe it has just run out of steam.

Thanks Pixie - didn't know that about warming her up.

If it had been yesterday, could've gone to mums as they have been away but they got back tonight.

Did you manage last night. Were you all ok?

SpringCrimboTurkey · 03/12/2004 09:12

Thanks for asking PF! We managed OK, DD slept in with us which we fine.

Have put the heater on this morning and there is a tiny little bit of heat comming out of it but i'm out and about today so think i will leave it off all day to try and re-energise.

We have storage heaters here too (no central heating sadly!) and as Mirage said, my ones only work over night (11.30pm - 5.30am) and then release the heat throughout the day.
If you have a little bit of heat coming out, maybe it could be the temperature control is damaged (stuck on a lower setting?)

SpringCrimboTurkey · 03/12/2004 12:33

Unfortunately not kid - the temperature setting appears to be fine.

Have just put it on again after going to ASDA and will see how long it last for this time. Otherwise, i will go and buy a new one at homebase.

if you have a local industrial estate with an electrical wholesaler on go there instead of homebase. we have just bought all new storage heaters for our property and they were much cheaper from the wholesaler.

we bought ones by a company called Unidare, they are exactly the same as Creda but less expensive.

but if you are moving anyway i'd suggest you buy an oil filled radiator style heater. then you can take it with you when you move.
