I am looking at second hand bikes and DS is a tall nearly 4 year old...what size do I need to look for?

We bought DS1 a 20inch bike for his 4th birthday last month. He's very tall though (116cm) and the smaller ones had no 'growing room' when we tried him on them.

In retrospect I wish we'd bought a cheap 16inch as it's verging on being too big for a first bike. Stabilisers aren't designed to be on bikes that size so they don't balance it very well and I think he'd be more confident on a smaller one.

So the point of that ramble is to say, 16inch, probably!

Thanks Olihan - I saw one for sale which was 14" and DH thought it would be too small...so 16" is probably about right.

we got a 14" one for dd who is just over 4 and it is plenty big enough. She is 105.5cms tall.

The 16" ones tend to say from age 5 so it does depend how long his legs are really.

Probably 16? but why don't you take him to toys-r-us or somewhere and try a few. Then you'll know. If you get him the wrong size it will be a bit of a waste. I have a not very tall 4 year old and a 14? would be too big. But my tall 6 year old couldn't manage a 20? last summer so it's really hard to tell by age. And yes, Olihan is right about the stabilizer thing.

I'd say DEFINITELY the 16". My DD is tall and got a 16" at 3.75 after being measured at a bike shop and I was very glad we got that and not the 14" which she would have grown out of in a matter of months. She is now nearly 6 and we are on the verge of upgrading to a 20" (I plan to get for her birthday in April).
