How do you restore dishwasher-ed glasses?

All my wine glasses are water-stained (?) from the dishwasher. Does anyone have any idea of how to restore them as I'll need them to look nice at Christmas? Or is it hopeless and I'll have to get some more?

hi bettys, are they stained and sort of unrinsed looking? if so, the obvious thing would be to check that you don't need to top up the rinse aid and salt in your dishwasher. if this doesn't make any difference it could be that they are scratched - as i'm sure you know dishwasher detergent can be very abrasive. fraid i don't know any remedy for the scratching. sorry.

I think they end up getting scratched what ever you do. The answer is, only to buy cheap ones and throw them away.
Tesco's do an economy range, that are very cheap.
We by loads from charity shops or car boot sales. We have been known to have the odd party, and you can give eveyone a proper wine glass without worrying about breakages.

If they're crystal, then I don't think there is much you can do as it's a chemical reaction between the dishwasher stuff and the glass. You could always ask in a china/glassware shop in case they do have a remedy.

Sigh...thanks for your comments. I've tried salt & rinse-aid, & being in a hard water area probably doesn't help. Good job they were cheap glasses in the first place. Looks like it's back to Ikea for some more!

I discovered by chance that although my dishwasher getsmost things lovely and shiny, there are some things that only come off in the washing up bowl with a gentle scrub. It might be worth a go before you give up. I got paint on an anyway up cup and it was there for weeks until I washed it by hand one day and it came of really easily. Same with the stains you get in tea mugs. Or maybe I've just got a duff dishwasher!

Hi - apparently, according to my mum, soaking in vinegar works, although not tried it myself.

I wouldn't suggest balsamic though!!

JanZ · 12/11/2002 11:55

Probably similar to the vinegar, but I'd read somewhere that running citric acid through the dishwasher would help get rid of the white staining on glasses. Apparently you can buy it from chemists - but I've never got round it it! (When my Reidel glasses, as opposed to the cheapo water glasses, start staining, then I'll probably bother!)

Try soaking them in sterilising solution (tablet or 2 in sink of plain warm water).

If that doesn't get it off, they're scratched I'm afraid and nothing sort or heating them to great temperature (don't do this) will solve your problem.

Great, I'll be trying these ideas out as soon as I've got running water (kitchen in throes of being demolished & rebuilt). Will report back on the results.
