Mice in my walls and between the floorboards and ceiling

Been in my house 2 years. No issues last winter now it's like a free for all. They're in my walls and under the floorboards and i can hear them in my ceiling.
Problem is i live in a chalet bungalow and have laminate floors throughout so can't lift the floorboards.

Have found possible entry points outside, and have been advised to bait them and then once I hear nothing for 2 days to close up the holes. They've been baited for 2 days and I can still hear them. I caught one in my house in a trap but haven't had visible signs since.

Hate them. Normally stoical with beasties but mice/rats....NO NO NO.

i think it's worth getting a professional pest controller in, if you can afford it.
one quoted recently was £320 plus vat, but it did sound a very thorough service.
have no knowledge of their actual work. so cannot recommend, just wanted to share the quote.
think they were called diamond. depends on area.

Have you got any home emergency insurance ours covers a pest controller?

BasiliskStare · 11/11/2022 19:54

If you have any access from outside ( eg air vents ) put very very fine mesh over that. So fine that mice can't get through. Otherwise pay for someone ( if you are able to ) to get rid of them. Mice can wriggle though tiny spaces.

But easy to get rid of with professional help

Phone the council. Their prices are more reasonable.

Get a cat. That's my answer to most things tbf.

nicemarmot · 11/11/2022 23:32

Agree that the council are much cheaper.

If they die under your floors/in your walls, they will stink: don’t poison or trap them without professional help!

Aquamarine1029 · 12/11/2022 00:40

You need a professional and you needed one ages ago.

This has only been an issue for about 2 weeks. I used to live in an old farm house in the country and had gotten professionals in and they came immediately with no issue, but there wasnt the same floorboard issue. First signs here I put down traps in different rooms with no luck, changed the bait still no results. I then sighted one in my utility after a week, didnt catch one until about 2 or 3 days after that, despite baited trap. Still heard scratching, laid more baits, phoned to get specialists, left messages with 3 companies expecting reply, but nothing. Phoned rentokil got exorbitant quote. I'll have to wait till Monday now, meantime friend has offered advice re entry point around my outside boiler, traps remain in place and some bait outside also. I'm rural which probably doesn't help. Silence last night so fingers crossed.

So thanks Aquamarine for your judgey reply.

Have you checked if your local council do free pest control visits?

NatalieIsFreezing · 12/11/2022 15:05

Is it definitely mice, not rats? had a big problem with one or two rats. They simply would not go in any traps no matter how much we blocked their "holes" with them and left them for weeks to get used to them. They are total arseholes!
