How can I curl my straight hair?

Jennisaurus · 30/11/2004 21:53

I am going to a party next week and I would love to curl my long (mid back) poker straight hair.

I have used tongs before the curls just drop out or look odd. Someone said you can use GHDs to give nice curls, but when I try it looks just a bit kinky!

Any products that can keep the curls in?

Am desperate to have sexy hair!!

rollers and setting lotion

do those steam curler things not work? theres one in teh argos book for about £20.00 I did think of getting it, but would be a waste of money if it didn't work. (they're in the section with the straightners.

(one of the girls I wne to school with used to sleep with her hair in rags so it would be curley the next day, not sure exactly how she did it thou, never thought to ask.)

IME, (poker straight fine hair) you can't without perming. Not with any chance of it staying in. Slightest bit of excitement on my part, rushing around to go out, damp in the air - and I'm left with something that looks a ocmplete mess.

Even last week I tried to do DD's hair, similar to mine. Used advice from my hairdresser SIL to create gorgeous ringlets for a wedding and by the time she got downstairs they had curled into one and dropped out by the time we got to the wedding

I've just learned to love straight hair.

munnzieb · 30/11/2004 22:59

does that work the same for thick heavy hair?

Fimbo · 30/11/2004 23:35

My dd has straight hair and loves "special hair" for parties etc. I put some conditioner on her hair, then put it into french plaits, she has grown out her fringe so I can do it from the top of her forehead all the way down (which helps). I usually do it just before she is going to bed and do it quite tightly (not so as it hurts) so that it stays in the next day, then I take it out the day after that and it usually stays curly all day, even after running about wild in the playground.

Interesting that you think curly hair is sexy. I have curly hair and think straight hair is sexy! Want to swap?

My niece (the one with the hairdresser mum!) has thicker, coarser, straight hair, complicated by a double crown.

Her mum put her hair up and into perfect ringlets for the wedding. It didn't survive the trip either. I have a photo of her post official wedding photos I've labelled 'The Wild One'

you can use mouse, gel, spritz or a thermal styling spray to keep the curls in. Is you hair fine? if so wash hair the day before(ie not on day of curling) did you want ringlet curls or barrel curls? ceramic straightners can do curls in quite a few ways. the two that i like are:

  1. to wind the hair around the straightners, hold and then release. 2)wind hair round finger, pull finger out leaving hair in a bunch and place it into straighners, hold and then release.

the secret is to sray hair with chosen spray all in one go, comb thru and then spray each section before you curl it. and then spritz it when styled. And dont comb it or keep touching it. you could try using your tongs with this technque aswell.

If you wanted to set curl your hair you can use those ringlet rollers, or even straws for a lovely straw curl. use the same technique of spraying hair as above remembering to spray each section. you can also pin curl your hair too.

How about doing a trial run this week when you have time to see if it stays. If you think it wont last how about putting hair up and then ringletting the ends? that way your hair wills till look styled if it begins to droop.

BTW, I have some heated ringlet curlers if you would like to borrow them to see how they work before you buy some. (anything for a fellow LTS)

did you know you can get the equivalent of GHD ceramic straigheners but to make straight hair curly? It's basically a ceramic cylinder that you plug in and then you wind hair around it and it creates curls. Hairdresser told me it was amazing and that even those with dead straight hair get curls that don't come out. (and he wasn't try to sell me one becuase I like straightening my hair).

are these sorts of things any good with straight hair?

Jennisaurus · 01/12/2004 22:56

Nasa I have heard of them, maybe I will ask at my hairdressers?

Champs thanks v.much for the offer I picked up some hair spray stuff tonight so I am going to have a go again with my curling tongs tomorrow and see how that goes, and if its crap I might persuade DH to buy me an early Christmas present of heated rollers!!
